Course Objective

The Roman portrait art began to develop on a solid surface from the 3rd century BCE. Outstanding works were demonstrated by a high level of success towards the 3th century CE. In such success, the realist approach was a decisive and distinctive factor. Portraiture has manifested itself in many diverse areas. In Roman imperialist politics, especially starting from Augustus, it became a powerful propaganda tool. Similarly, it was one of the effective ways that the elite ruling classes in the provinces used to introduce themselves to the public., various areas ranging from the daily life of the time to the style of fashion, the dominant political thought and cultural perspective can be touched. Through the portraits of Roman imperial period, the daily life, fashion styles, politics and cultural perspectives can be perceived. In this context, the course of development of the portrait art of the Roman imperial period will be followed and its use in political and social fields will be discussed. In this context, the aim of the course is to follow the development line of the Roman imperial portrait art and to examine its use in political and social fields.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

2   To able to explain the distinctive features of the Roman portrait art,
3   To able to identify the centuries in which portraits were created and the famous figures they represented with stylistic comparisons,
4   To able to explain the production of the portraits of empresses and outstanding women and the areas where they are located,
5   To able to use the styles of portrait art as a dating method,
6   To able to analyze the physiognomy in portraits,
7   To able to analyze the portraits were created by taking into consideration the difference of profession and status.
