General Description

History

Department of Maritime Business Administration was established under Social Sciences Institute in 1993. Maritime Business Administration PhD Program, which started education under the roof of this Department in 2000, carries out PhD level scientific research and education activities. Within the context of maritime related interests of Turkey, the aim of the PhD program in Maritime Business Administration is to educate scientists who are equipped with the ethics of science, spirit of discovery and entrepreneurship, universal knowledge, skills and competences and who carry out interdisciplinary researches at the PhD level in the main and side fields of maritime transport and maritime business administration. Medium of instruction of the program is English.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma; a minimum Cum. GPA of 80/100 or 3/4; a minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field or GRE/GMAT equivalent; a minimum score of 55 from the Foreign Language Exams (ÜDS/KPDS/YDS/e-YDS/YÖKDİL) or from equivalent foreign language proficiency exam approved by OSYM. Transcript; a minimum score of 75 from the graduate school academic proficiency exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

4 years, 2 semesters per year,16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Maritime Business Adiminstration is an academic discipline that aims to educate competent individuals in the maritime field. In Maritime Business Administration PhD Program offers opportunities to specialize in maritime business areas such as ship operations management, maritime policy and strategies, port management, maritime finance, maritime economics, logistics and supply chain management, along with the general maritime business field. Thus, it is expected that the students who complete the program will be able to work in corporate maritime and logistics enterprises and related public institutions, both in Turkey and abroad, as middle and senior managers, and as academicians in universities.

The aim of Maritime Business Adiministration PhD Program is to have theoretical knowledge in the field of maritime business admanistration; able to learn on their own by following academic developments; able to contribute to the production of scientific knowledge and transfer knowledge by synthesizing the theoretical knowledge related to the field of expertise with a critical perspective; to educate academicians and researchers who show a principled approach to the philosophy of science and science ethics.

Education and scientific research activities of the program are carried out in equipped classrooms and in Port Operations, Logistics, Computer and Business Simulation Laboratories. Students and academics have access to both wireless and ethernet line, internet connections and a library. The medium of instruction of the program is English.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of Maritime Business Administration PhD Program are employed in a wide range of positions in both private and public sectors. The graduates can acquire positions as high level managers in different fields of the private sector, such as shipowning and ship management companies, ship agents, export-import companies, marine insurance companies, ports, logistic companies, yachting companies and marinas. In public sector, our graduates can be employed in managerial positions in Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, other related ministry offices and public institutions. Also graduates can be employed as research assistants, lecturers, or academics in universities.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates may apply to post doctorate studies.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

Courses in the program are given in two semesters. The courses in the program provide the knowledge, skills and competencies to have doctoral level knowledge in the field of maritime business administration, to examine the concepts and ideas related to this field with scientific methods, to interpret and evaluate data, and to follow the innovations in the field. There are compulsory and elective courses in the program. Elective courses are offered in both Fall and Spring semesters. Students must take elective courses as well as compulsory courses. Students must take 30 ECTS courses in a semester (including elective courses, seminar and field study courses).

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Measurement and evaluation methods for each course are defined in the course syllabus prepared by the instructor/s. Exam and passing grades are regulated according to the rules and regulations of Dokuz Eylül University, Institute of Social Sciences graduate programs as indicated in catalogs.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program consists of a total of 240 ECTS, including the thesis, the related courses (57 ECTS), the specialization course (18 ECTS), the seminar (3 ECTS) and the thesis (162 ECTS). Students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.50/4.00 and pass all courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
