General Description

History

Philosophy and Religious Studies Masters Degree Program aims to educate high level researchers in the field Philosophy and Religious Studies who are able to get and produce academic information within scientific criteria; able to research and analyze in national and international levels; able to share the information with the shareholders and whose ability of analysis are developed. Consists of History of Philosophy, Islamic Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, Sociology of Religion, Psychology of Religion, Religious Education departments. Postgraduate education is given in every department. Language of education and instruction is Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines, Transcript, Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first cycle cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. The exceptions to the requirements of ALES and Foreign Language Proficiency scores is announced by the Graduate School. However, ALES requirement is waived for the admissions to the second cycle graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test as well as for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

2 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Dokuz Eylul University Graduate School of Social Philosophy and Religious Studies Masters Degree Program has 16 professors and 15 research assistants. There is a library that can facilitate the researches and thesis studies of the students and also wireless internet opportunity. The language of education and instruction is Turkish.

1   They improve their knowledge and competency to an expert level in the area of Philosophy and Religious Sciences based on their background from the undergraduate degree.
2   They gain ability and proficiency to conduct interdisciplinary research.

4   They develop a scientific attitude to conduct a scientific research with ethical canon and principles.
5   They grasp the formal ways to reason correctly and consistently.
6   They have knowledge on the history and philosophy of science.
7   They learn systematic and philosophical approaches on subjects such as existence, knowledge, nature, arts, ethics, human, God, prophecy, politics, science and so on in both the history of humankind and the Islamic thought.
8   They understand problematic and questionable areas in God, relationships between God-universe, religion-science, religion-arts, and religion-ethics, and different approaches towards those areas.
9   They study the classical subjects and modern issues in philosophy of ethics such as happines, competency, virtue and so on; environment, occupation, job, politics, poverty, meaning of life and so forth, and they develop ethical conscience.
10   They investigate various religions in history and contemporary times in chronological and phenomenological approaches and question the nature of interfaith dialogue.
11   They learn classical and modern sociological approaches on subjects such as religion, religion-society relations, religious institutions and so on, and they develop to examine the religion-society phenomena with the sociological imagination.
12   They analyze subjects such as individual-religion relations, religious life, religious experience and so on based upon philosophical approaches.
13   They have the opportunity to work efficiently in formal and common religious education and to comprehend positive communication techniques and approaches.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates, awarded the degree of MA in Philosophy and Religious Studies are able to perform their jobs more professionally and they can assigned as research assistant or lecturer in the faculties of Science and Literature, Education, Human Sciences and especially in the faculties of theology.

All courses in Masters Degree Program in Philosophy and Religious Studies are elective. There are no pre-requisite courses in the program. The students who pass all the courses in 2 semesters are required to prepare a seminar study. Right after the study, they prepare and defend their MA thesis.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Masters Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 53 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS) and field study (4 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/ S / TP grades.
