History

The Department of Economics was founded in 1992 within the Faculty of Business.
The Department of Economics defines its mission as to offer a highly innovative reseach-oriented academic education on universal standards. The fields in the Department are, Economic Policy, Economic Theory, International Economics and Economic Development and Economic History. With its young and distinguished staff, the Deparment aims to acquaint its students with recent methods, approaches and theories in economics, and to train them as the future practioneers of the discipline. The medium of instruction is English.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

General frame for recognition of prior learning is arranged in Dokuz Eylul University Educational and Examinational Regulation of Pre-Graduate and Undergraduate Degree through the articles 11-12-13-14. Details are explained in DEU Faculty of Business Educational and Examinational Regulations based on the regulation of the DEU.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The Bachelors Degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (C.G.P.A.) of 2.00/4.00 and 240 ECTS. Regulations arrange the details of the requirements:
Dokuz Eylul University Educational and Examinational Regulation of Pre-Graduate and Undergraduate Degree (articles 33,34,35)
DEU Faculty of Business Educational and Examinational Regulations (Articles 33,34,35).

Profile of the Programme

Economics is a subject that explores the process through which economic units make decisions with respect to allocation of scarce resources. The content of the economics discipline covers wide variety of issues related to public policies such as markets, government, institutions, growth, development, inflation and unemployment. The structure of the programme is designed to provide a broad based training in theory and practice. In addition, the academic staff and students have growing commitments for carrying out international collaboration with other universities in order to raise their international profile. The academic staff is committed to both teaching and making contributions to the science of economics by theoretical and empirical research. The structure of the Department covers four areas: Economic Theory, Economic Policy, Economic Development and International Economics, Economic History.
We offer a minor in Economics to students who are interested in diversifying their career options through the field of economics. The objective is fostering intellectual excellence by integrating disciplines in the social sciences
Students enrolled in any one of the DEU Faculty of Business departments other than the Economics Department and other units of the university with a 3.00 GPA might apply and receive a minor in Economics fulfilling all other requirements in minor program regulations. To declare a minor in economics students should take and complete 8 compulsory and 1 departmental elective from any track, with an overall 2.50 GPA.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of Department of Economics are employed in a wide range of positions in both the private and public sectors. Our graduates can acquire positions in different fields of the private sector, such as banking, consulting firms, audit companies and many of them are employed in important foreign enterprises. In public sector, our graduates can be employed at Banks, Central Bank, and any public institution that can be applied with Public Personnel Exam (KPSS).

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The regulations for examination and grading are arranged in the fourth part of DEU Faculty of Business Educational and Examinational Regulations. The lowest grade to be successful in a credit course is DD. Other grades; Incomplete (I) accorded to students who, although otherwise successful, have failed to complete the required assignments for a course. A student receiving an incomplete grade for any course must make up for the deficiencies within 30 days after submitting the grades to Registrars Office. Otherwise, the grade I automatically becomes FF. Satisfactory (S) accorded to students who are successful in non-credit courses. Unsatisfactory (U) accorded to students who are unsuccessful in non-credit courses. Exempt ( E) is given to students who transfer to the program from another, after the equivanlence of courses they have taken previously is recommended by the dean/director and approved by the faculty board. This grade may provide an exemption for a particular course at the program.
No Attendance (NA) is given upon failure to attend classes or complete practical or applied components of a course. (NA) configures in CGPA as FF.
