General Description

History

The institution opened the classes to the students for undergraduate studies in the name of Izmir Institute of Education Music Department in 1974 and then the institution continued to the education as the School of Higher Teachers(1978) and Buca Education Faculty Music Department(1986). In the frame of the accreditation of Education Faculties, the institution has been called as the Fine Arts Education Music Education Department since 1999. In the department of music education, some of the important courses are about music teaching, musical instrument training, voice training and music theory etc. There are masters program since the academic year of 1992-1993 and postgraduate program since the academic year of 2001-2002.

The PhD Degree in Music Education is awarded to the graduates who successfully fullfilled all programme courses and who defend their thesis in front of an academic jury.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines. Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first or second cycle (with thesis) cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. However, ALES requirement is waived for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs as well as for the admissions to the graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Successful students who have completed at least one semester in the graduate program of another institute within the university or another higher education institution may apply for a transfer in the announced dates if the quota is determined by the Board of Directors. The conditions for admission of the transfer are determined by the institute board.

Exemption requests of students for the courses taken at graduate program of another department/university with a successful grade are evaluated by the Administrative Board of the Institute by the recommendation of the head of the departments according to the provisions of Dokuz Eylül University Exemption and Adaptation Directives.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

PhD program consists of at least seven courses, thesis proposal, field of expertise, proficiency exam, seminar and thesis work, not less than at least 21 local credits.
The student workload for a semester is 30 ECTS, and the total workload to complete the PhD program is 240 ECTS.
In addition to midterm and final exams, learning activities such as reports, assignments, quizzes, seminar presentations and project studies can be used in the performance evaluation of the student during the semester. In order for the student to be successful in this course, the grade must be at least 75 out of 100 (at least 2.50 out of 4.00). Seminar, thesis work and specialization courses are evaluated as successful / unsuccessful.

Profile of the Programme

The objective of the programme is to provide basic knowledge and skills in the field of music education, to support the candidates for developing their skills for scientific approach in their fields.
The aim of these program is to contribute the academical structuring of the department and the other departments as well. The language of instruction is Turkish.

1   To be able to use the knowledge, understanding, or the opportunity by broadening and intensifying the knowledge gained in the bachelors degree to develope and apply original ideas in music education.
2   To be able to apply the skills of knowledge, comprehending and problem solving in a wide (or interdisciplinary) context related to music education.
3   To transmit clearly the results, knowledge and the arguments acquired from research activities in music education area to the people who are specialist or not.
4   To have learning skills of studying independently in music education area.
5   To have learning skills of studying independently in relation to main branches.
6   To have learning skills of performing national or international musical works.
7   To represent proficiency in skills and methods concerning main branches.
8   To follow and apply new technologies related to the music education.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The related doctorate degree provides the rights and privileges to practice the profession.
The graduates of Music Education program enjoy productive careers in public and private schools run by the Ministry of National Education as teachers. The graduates should work as an academician in universities.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates may apply to post doctorate studies.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Students must attend classes, practices and examinations. In order for students to qualify for midterms they should attend 70% of the theoretical classes and 80% of the application/lab classes. Students attendance is followed by their Instructor. For almost all required and elective courses there are two written examinations: One midterm examination (given during each semester and dates of which are announced by the Department in the first month of the semester) and one final exam. The instructor announces the weekly course content, the course book and how students will be evaluated and the dates of the exams to the students and the Institute at the beginning of the semester. The instructor evaluated the students depending on their midterm and final grades, attendance to the class, their additional work such as projects, presentations and assignments which were presented at the beginning of the semester.
A make up exam is offered for graduate classes. Upon the approval of the Institute Board students can take the exam from the lessons that they have already passed in order to increase their GPA.
To be able to pass a lesson a graduate student must have minimum CB.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program is comprised of at least 7 courses (minimum 21, maximum 30 national credits) more than, passing a qualifying examination, preparing and defending a doctoral dissertation, in total 240 ECTS credits.
The programme consists of mandatory and selective courses. The total ECTS credits of the programme is 240 ECTS. Graduation requirements in detail are explained in the section Qualification Requirements and Regulations .
