General Description

History

The objective of the Philosophy of Doctorate program in Tourism Management in Dokuz Eylül University is to educate scientists; who internalize scientific thinking and devoted to ethical principles; who can evaluate the developments in tourism sector from humanities and social sciences perspectives; who can interpret any topic in the field from the critical point of view; who can recommend strategic solutions at macro and micro levels to problems generated in tourism field; wo can conduct advanced research, discuss the results and is competent to make decisions.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma; a minimum Cum. GPA of 80/100 or 3/4; a minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field or GRE/GMAT equivalent; a minimum score of 60 from the Foreign Language Exams (ÜDS/KPDS/YDS/e-YDS/YÖKDİL) or from equivalent foreign language proficiency exam approved by OSYM. Transcript; a minimum score of 75 from the graduate school academic proficiency exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

4 years, 2 semesters per year,16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   To be able to acquire scientific thinking, interpret science with critical approach, contribute to science and apply the knowledge of philosophy of science in every aspect of academic life.
2   To be able to acquire contemporary developments in tourism sectors from the point of view of humanities and social sciences (tourism marketing, tourism sociology, management and organization etc.); and to relate to one another, evaluate, and declare an opinion by examining using critical approach in interdisciplinary dimension.
3   To be able to evaluate the problems in the field strategically, foresee strategic solutions providing benefits to stakeholders, evaluate using strategic decision making processes, and take initiative.
4   To be able to analyze and evaluate economics of tourism sectors; and to provide solutions and recommendations to problems encountered.
5   To be able to examine, evaluate and excel contemporary and advanced knowledge in the field of marketing; and to evaluate and synthesize the relationship between marketing and disciplines such as sociology, psychology and management.
6   To be able to collect sectoral data using information technologies; to analyze the data using necessary fundamental statistical knowledge; and to discuss, examine, report, and present results on the field studied by applying advanced research methods.
7   To be able to propose regional plans and policies based on the knowledge of tourism policy and planning
8   To be able to understand the importance sustainable tourism in national development; and to grasp, explain and defend sustainability framework.
9   To be able to grasp functioning of tourism sectors by taking into account of management, marketing, finance, economic and sociological perspectives in a holistic view; and to analyze, evaluate and recommend in any topic related to tourism businesses.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (87 ECTS), a field study (3 ECTS) and thesis (150 ECTS), in total 240 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
