General Description

History

The Graduate Program of Translation and Interpreting was founded in 1999 with both German and English divisions. Beginning with the first graduates in 2003, to date there are 29 English division graduates and 8 German division graduates. As of 2014-2015, there are 13 graduate students currently studying, 1 in the German division and 12 in the English division.
The aim of the graduate program is to train researchers and translation teachers/instructors. In addition to the graduates of the department of Translation and Interpreting, the program also enables students from other fields to develop themselves as translators.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle (Bachelor's Degree) diploma; a minimum score of 55 from the Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field or GRE/GMAT equivalent; a minimum score of 50 from the Foreign Language Exams (ÜDS/KPDS/YDS/e-YDS/YÖKDİL) or from equivalent foreign language proficiency exam approved by OSYM or a minimum score of 55 from DEU School of Foreign Languages English Proficiency Test. Transcript; a minimum score of 65 from the graduate school academic proficiency exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Profile of the Programme

The language of education is English. The main aim of the Master s Program in English Translation and Interpreting is to graduate students specialized on Translation Studies who are needed by public and private sector, and to prepare them for further post-graduate research. In this respect, the program aims to educate students as experts who can evaluate the theoretical, historical, linguistic, cultural and political dimensions of translations/translators within a critical perspective and to provide them with the related knowledge and skills on scholarly grounds.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   To develop specialized theoretical and historical knowledge about translation.
2   To assess and discuss translation problems by using theoretical and methodological knowledge which forms basis to translation studies.
3   To observe and discuss the critical and analytical relations between source and target texts in the field of translation.
4   To question analytically the relations between languages, texts, cultures, actors and institutions in the field of translation studies.
5   To gain the ability to determine and question the theoretical and practical ambiguities in translation studies literature.
6   To make research in translation studies by using scientific research methods, to collect data and classify and interpret them.
7   To make new interdisciplinary projects by gathering knowledge from various disciplines with his/her knowledge in translation studies.
8   To use theoretical, historical, critical and interdisciplinary knowledge and skills in the field of translation education.
9   To be able to prepare an original research project in compliance with the scientific criteria in the field of translation studies.
10   To have scientific and ethical values when making research, collecting, interpreting and publishing data.
11   To be able to design and conduct scientific research in the field of translation independently.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The graduates of Masters in English Translation and Interpreting can pursue their careers in academic fields. They can carry on their scientific studies in doctoral and further levels under the university. We have many graduates working as research assistants, instructors or assistant professors at various state and private universities as well as a lot of graduates working as foreign language teachers at the Ministry of National Education and private schools. Also, our graduates work as editors or translators at publishing houses and as translators or interpreters at translation agencies. They can start their own translation offices or work as freelancers. Furthermore, they play various roles in projects of the European Union.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

There are 12 elective and 2 prerequisite courses in the Masters Program with thesis on English Translation and Interpreting. Students are required to take at least 30 ECTS in the 1st and 2nd semesters and 60 ECTS in total. All electives are offered by the Department. There is no common electives/prerequisites or courses from a pool. Courses aim at equipping students with knowledge, skills and competence in translation theories, translation history, research methods and translation in specific subjects.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Masters Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 56 ECTS), a seminar (2 ECTS) and field study (2 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
