: Animation Film Design and Directing

General Description

History

School of Cinema, TV and Photography of the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of 9 Eylul, was founded in the city of İzmir in Türkiye in 1975, by Prof Dr. Alim Şerif Onaran. The first generation alumni of the school have shaped the New Turkish Cinema tradition and, from 1980's onwards, the department have trained many future directors who became leading names in Turkish cinema. The said film directors include Semih Kaplanoğlu (who was awarded with Golden Bear Award at Berlin International Film Festival with his film Bal [Honey] in 2010), Ömer Uğur, Ümit Ünal, Oğuzhan Tercan, Kudret Sabancı, Raşit Çelikezer, Yüksel Aksu, and TV series directors Sadullah Celen, Taner Akvardar and Türkan Derya. Department of Film Design (the department s name changed in 2009) also present Honorary Doctorate Award to Theodoros Angelopoulos in 2010 with his participation. In Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival (one of the most prestigious Film Festival on Turkish Cinema) which took place in October 2011, the graduates are awarded with 5 awards including best film, best director and best screenplay.

High school diploma, placement through a nation-wide Student Selection Examination.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

An undergraduate transfer to the faculty is applied within the meritorious regulation provisions published in Official Journal no: 27561 dated 24.4.2010 about: transfers between associate degree programs and undergraduate programs, double major, lateral branch and interinstitutional credit transfer making.
In the vertical transfers; the regulation provisions published in Official Journal no: 24676 dated 19.2.2002 about: undergraduate education attendance of graduates of vocational high school and open-university associate degree program is applied.
Within the transfer of students who did not or could not complete their undergraduate education to vocational high schools; the regulation provisions published in Official Journal no: 20112 dated 18.3.1989 about getting associate diploma or adaptation of students who did not or could not complete their undergraduate education to vocational high schools is applied.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year,16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.
1- Training is performed based on course passing system in faculty.
2- Failed courses belong to an academic year are firstly enrolled next academic year.
3- Absolute assessment system is applied in faculty.
4- Grade point avarage (GPA) ; it is calculated by dividing the number which is found by multiplying course credits with marks to total credit in relevant term.
5- General Grade point avarage (GGPA) ; it covers the whole courses and education period so far and is calculated by dividing the number which is found by multiplying all course credits with marks to total credit.
6- Only enrolled courses are taken into consideration in GPA and GGPA calculation, the courses which can not be attend are omitted. The last mark is considered for repeated courses. In average calculation, two decimal after comma is used.
7- The last mark gained for repeated courses is passing mark. Whether have been taking course addition to maximum load not exceedingly two courses or not and its conditions are determined by Faculy Administrative Board.

Profile of the Programme

Animated Film Design and Directing Major aims to maintain an education program which involves educating animators who have both teoretical and practical knowledge - for media industry equipped with art and cinema culture, animator crew competent of animated film production. Another aim of the Major is to educate animators who can produce creative design solucions, who follow recent technological developments on art and can easily adapt themselfs to those developments.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Plan, write, produce and direct their film (fiction or documentary) projects; have professional production skills, and be able to recognise and use video/television, film and sound technologies.
2   During their period of study, complete creative film and video productions to show his ability of participation in original and individual works which are developed with aesthetic notions such as story, composition, lightning and sound.
3   Gain skills to create written and audiovisual stories.
4   Run independent researches on visual and written materials. Decide the necessary knowledge on a problem or research subject, and obtain, evaluate and use these knowledge effectively in order to produce deep knowledge. Represent his/her studies in an appropriate written format, as a reserach essay.
5   Possess knowledge of aesthetics and history of film art and improve his/herself particularly on art, philosophy and history.
6   Gain a comprehensive knowledge on World cinema and Turkish cinema confirming national and international standarts.
7   Analyze critically creative processes of films / media productions in aesthetical, historical and cultural context and use it in his/her own works (in the fields of animated film directing and animated film design).
8   Possess knowledge on production- distribution chain in film and television industry.
9   Be technically well-equipped, up to date on technological developments, have a good comprehension of professional terminology, be able to use the skills contributing contemporary cinema, recognize and use the equipment of production and follow the latest innovations, have knowledge of sharing tasks and responsibilities necessary for the film business.
10   Be canorous on human relations, work in a group and have a work discipline in order to be successful in the field of cinema as a collective art. And have ability of directing, develop emphaty, soothe the probable problems and being objective.
11   Have the knowledge for evaluating the technical codes of other art forms (theatre, music, painting etc.) and ability of communication and interaction between these art forms.
12   Possess a researching order and discipline, be determined and responsible and be notable via his/her difference in the competition conditions.
13   As creating information and entertainment through film productions, be sensitive to race, religion, geneder and positions, processes and behaviors of political and social groups and have a general cultural formation in harmony with educational level and social environment.
14   Have a good command of a foreign language allowing to follow information in his/her field and to communicate with his/her colleagues.
15   Possess a frame of mind that can question everything and don t submit any kind of dogma

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

This degree enables the undergraduate to exercise the profession in film and television business (including advertising, tv series, tv shows etc.) and also work in the academic fields.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The regulations for examination and grading are arranged in the fourth part of DEU Faculty of Fine Arts Educational and Examinational Regulations. The lowest grade to be successful in a credit course is 50. Detailed assessment methods and criteria for courses are explained in syllabi.

Graduation Requirements

A student is required to have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (C.G.P.A.) of 50/100 and no failing grades.
A student is required to have minimum 240 credits of ECTS in total.
A student is required to complete the field internships in designated terms and hours.
