Course Objective

This course aims to help students develop an original project and gain familiarity with the pre-production, production and post-production phases of a digital 2D animation project.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To learn the basics of digital animation techniques.
2   To gain proficiency in digital animation techniques.
3   To have an understanding of the production methods of digital animation techniques.

Course Contents

1 Short format screenplay, synopsis, treatment
2 Students' presentation of their synopses; screenplay formatting
3 Presentation and evaluation of screenplays; dialogue recording
4 Presentation and evaluation of recordings; layout and blocking
5 Presentation and evaluation of animatics; pose-to-pose and straight-ahead Students are expected to begin the production phase by this week
6 Production progress reports (key poses) Students report on the progress of their projects
7 Production progress reports (breakdowns) Particular techniques/effects that projects require will be examined in lectures, if necessary

10 Production progress reports; compositing
11 Presentation and evaluation of rough cuts
12 Post-production progress reports Students report on the progress of their post-production phase

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The different phases of film production are explained and relevant examples are analyzed; students are expected to develop an original project based on these examples.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

50% of the final course grade is based on the weekly presentations where students report on their progress; the remaining 50% is based on the completed project.

Assessment Criteria

Students are expected to report on the progress of their projects weekly.
The final project is assessed based on its originality, technical complexity and implementation.

Students must attend at least 70% of the lectures. Late assignments are not accepted.
