General Description

History

DEU Maritime Faculty has been established in Dokuz Eylul University in relation to Turkeys maritime interests and its main purpose is supplying quality human resources needed in Turkish maritime industry. Marine Transportation Engineering Department has been established in Maritime Faculty for educating high quality human resource who can create scientific papers, projects, researches and can be employed in high management offices. Maritime Safety, Security and Environmental Management Doctorate Program accepted its first students in 2013 - 2014 academic years. Marine Transportation Engineering Department also has a Maritime Safety, Security and Environmental Management Msc Program which has been started at 2005 under the Graduate School of Social Sciences.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines. Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first or second cycle (with thesis) cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. However, ALES requirement is waived for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs as well as for the admissions to the graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

4 years, 2 semesters per year,16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

DEU, Graduate School of Social Sciences, Marine Transportation Engineering Major Science Division is a highly specialized institution on its field educating students with total quality , safety, security and environmental management philosophy to become managers in Turkish Maritime Fleet in accordance with Turkeys maritime interests. Additionally school has close contacts with industry and educate managers for them.
Maritime Safety, Security and Environmental Management Doctorate Programs aim is educating scientists who is equipped with universal knowledge, capabilities, competences, who can make design, research, project on the field of maritime transportation engineering major and minor divisions, who is bound to scientific ethic, a creative, an innovative person.
DEU, Graduate School of Social Sciences, Marine Transportation Engineering is already continuing its academic life by expert academicians. Lectures and applications are given in 4 classrooms, bridge simulator, multi-purpose computer lab, liquid cargo handling simulator and computer laboratory. Whole building has wireless and wired internet access also there is a library to help students and professors.

1   In close pursuit of sea transport business related national and international literature, the learner becomes able to analys and the syntesize the scientific studies and take role in devoloping orginal/innovative scientific methods and models
2   Acts in compliance with scientific ethics and social responsibility
3   Encourages and contribute to developing new knowledge and skills diverse aspect and innovative approaches in shipping which is a multidisciplinary industry
4   Design and applies original researches based on analytic and experimental modeling, interpretes, improves, deepens and applies original knowledge and solves unpredictable problems likeklyto appear in sea transport.
5   Uses a systematic approach in evaluating and using new knowledge in sea transport issues.
6   In close contact with recent developments in shipping, gets able to create new approaches, methods, designs and/or practice or in different field; makes research on, designs, or interprete new original subjects; develops and improves life-long learning and individual improvement princibles.
7   With advanced level of knowledge and skills in applying research methods to sea transport and maritime business management, takes affective roles in directing the stake holders through sharing knowledge on various platforms and publishing scientfic researches.
8   With advanced knowledge and abilities advanced enough to analys/aynthesize shipping related developments, get able to develop new outlooks and methods, using such processes as creative and critical thought, problem solving and strategic decision making, and gets involved in functional intereffectiviness.
9   In close pursuit of the recent scientific technological social and cultural developments through a critical thinking approach, gets able to discuss, evaluate such developments and protects change when needed his/her innovative outlooks; establish effective interrelativeness and act as a leader.
10   Contributes to the processes and developments towards changing and enhancing the society in which he/she lives into knowledge society.
11   With clear awareness and consciousness of shipping related ethical, institutional, social and environmental values, contributes to solving the problems concerning these values and enhancing them.
12   Contributes at an advanced level to quality management systems practices, safety management techniques, establishing and enhancing safety culture

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of Doctorate Program in Maritime Security, Safety and Environmental Management are employed in positions related to their mastery as managers of shipping, sea craft and off shore platforms, in management positions of marina, port or other similar coastal facilities, or as designers or administrators of projects like waterways, canals or passages, as specialists in seamen health and work safety, maritime insurance, cargo operations, logistical services, dangerous cargo transportation, ship fleet management, ship brokering and chartering, maritime insurance and P&I, cargo and cargo handling processes or as shipping agents or in management positions in agencies, as maritime law enforces, freelance advisors for ship or coastal facilities related to marine transportation engineering procedures and equipment, and also as public servants in Republic of Turkey Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Ministry of National Education and as academicians in Public Universities.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates may apply to post doctorate studies.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

The Department Educational Plan is included mostly elective courses. There are no pre-qualified courses in the program. Duration of all courses are one term. The purpose of the courses in the program is giving doctorate level knowledge at maritime safety, security and environmental management field. Also courses should help to the students to analyze concepts, ideas on the field with scientific methodology, to gather data and then to analyze and evaluate said data. By the knowledge, capabilities and competences gained during courses students should observe and create new innovations in the field.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Measurement and evaluation methods for each course are defined in the course syllabus prepared by the instructor/s. Exam and passing grades are regulated according to the rules and regulations of Dokuz Eylül University, Institute of Social Sciences graduate programs as indicated in catalogs.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (80 ECTS), a field study (7 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS) and thesis (150 ECTS), in total 240 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
