DEGREE PROGRAMMES

: Environmental Engineering

General Description

History

Environmental Engineering Department firstly came into activity with the Departments of Environmental Technology and Environmental Sciences within the body of Dokuz Eylul University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences. Later, these two departments were integrated and gathered together under the single roof of Department of Environmental Engineering . In 1984, the education language was switched from Turkish to English with this integration. Until today, 284 graduate thesis studies have been completed. Among the 284 graduates, 53 of them are the Ph.D, while 231 are noted as M.Sc graduates. At present there are 71 M.Sc. students and 11 Ph.D. students under the body of Environmental Engineering Department. The faculty consists of 15 professors, 6 associate professors, and 2 assistant professors. The graduate studies includes the researches about air pollution and its control, water and wastewater pollution control, solid wastes management, and sludge control and management.

Qualification Awarded

Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering

Level of Qualification

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree)

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma; minimum 80/100 or 3/4 Cumulative Grade Point Average, minimum score of 60 from the National Central Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field; a minimum score of 70 from the graduate school entrance exam; a minimum score of 55 from the nation-wide Foreign Language Exam ( YDS ) or equivalent score from an exam accredited by YÖK.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students may be accepted for graduate transfer with the approval of the Department Directorate and decision of the Board of Directors of the Graduate School in case the student fulfills the graduate transfer regulations decided by the General Council of the Graduate School. Previously taken courses at another graduate programme with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes with the written request of the students including course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the Department Directorates and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students may have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective by the decision of the Board of Directors.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Programme has a large number of qualified faculty and staff members consisting of 12 professors, 4 associate professor, 4 assistant professors, 3 instructors, 4 specialists, 19 research assistants, and 3 technicians who are involved in teaching, training and research acitivities.
a) The M.Sc program includes 1 compulsory and 35 selective lectures, while there are 3 service lectures taken from the Department of Mathematics. Among the program lectures, 13 of them are the general engineering, statistical, and modeling courses; 12 of them are about water and wastewater treatment and surface water modeling; 3 of them include air pollution and modeling essentials; 3 of them include the topics for solid waste technologies, and 2 of them are related with the sludge control and management issues. For the M.Sc lectures, 15 of them are opened in fall semester, while 21 of them are opened in the spring semester.
b) The M.Sc. students complete the compulsory ECTS credits essential for them. At the end of the first semester, the students specify their research subjects, select their advisors, and they start their studies under the scope of the M.Sc Seminar lecture. The M.Sc. education period may last for minimum 3 semesters, or maximum 4 semesters. If necessary, the period may be extended for 2 more semesters. At the end of the period, the student presents his/her thesis to a scientific committee including 3 members, and the study is expected to be confirmed as successful .
The students thesis studies are mostly conducted in the research laboratories which are under the responsibility of teaching members, by using the high technology instruments and systems. Besides, there is a general preliminary laboratory and a research building used for operating prototype systems, and these facilities can be used by the researches.
In Dokuz Eylul University, most of the graduate thesis studies are financed by the budgets provided by Scientific Research Projects Department under the body of Service Department of Administrative and Financial Affairs.
Percentage of Courses Taught in English: 100%

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

We have the business knowledge about the 119 students (52%) of the total 231 M.Sc. graduates. It is reported that 90% of the reached graduates carry on professional activities in the area of environmental engineering. The distributions of these activities due to the working places are as follows:
i) 34% of the graduates work as teaching members, research assistants, or researchers in the universities, institutes, or other research establishments (Ex; Pamukkale University, Süleyman Demirel University, Turkish Scientific and Technical Research Establishment, Aquaculture Research Center)
ii) 43% of the graduates work in private sector including factories, business companies as well as engineering firms and environmental consulting offices.
iii) 17% of the graduates work in public institutes such as municipalities, ministries, etc.
iv) There is no graduate that work freelance, and 6% of the graduates are unemployed.

Access to Further Studies

May apply to post doctorate programmes.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

In addition to the compulsory courses of the programme, students register to elective courses appropriate for their thesis topic, on the consent of their supervisor. If necessary, on the consent of their supervisor, they can also register to courses from other programmes (from DEU or other universities). It?s obligatory to register ENV5001 for the students who does not have bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering. The courses can be opened in both semesters. It is obligatory to register MAT5101 Applied Mathematics (3 0 0) or MAT5102 Numerical and Approximate Methods (3 0 0) or MAT5151 Methods of Applied Mathematics (3 0 0) with approval of the supervisor. In the case of one of these courses taken during the M.Sc. education, these are not obligatory. The registration must be noticed to the Institute during course registration period by the supervisor. In order to enroll to Doctorate study in Environmental Engineering Program it is necessary to have an M. Sc. Diploma in Environmental Engineering Program or if M. Sc. is carried out in another program, it is necessary to have a B. Sc. Diploma in Environmental Engineering Program.
