Course Objective

The course aims to provide novel information on the modified and/or improved solid waste technologies as well as the newly developed waste processing techniques. The techniques questioning are either on i) the improvement of product amount and quality , or on ii) the reduction of system costs.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To have knowledge about solid waste generation and solid waste properties.
2   To have knowledge about the conventional basic unit operations used for solid wastes processing and disposal.
3   To have knowledge and standpoint to decide cost effective waste management options due to the waste characteristics and regional properties.
4   To have novel knowledge about the innovative solid waste technologies developed for waste processing and disposal.
5   To have knowledge about the national and solid waste strategies planned by the Turkish decision makers.

1 Solid waste characteristics Sources, components, and characteristics of the waste and the factors determining the waste properties, Physical, chemical and biological waste parameters
2 Conventional unit operations for solid wastes Basics of conventional waste processing and disposal techniques; landfilling, digestion, composting, incineration and pyrolysis
3 Current legal status for solid waste management Recent national and international waste regulations, and expected short term policies which control the waste management practices
4 Preliminary mechanical-biological techniques for solid wastes Seperation, size reduction, dewatering, organic matter reduction by composting
5 Basic operations for solid wastes Landfilling and biorector landfills, solid waste digesters
6 Midterm exam
7 Advanced thermal methods for solid wastes Incineration technique, pyrolysis
8 Advanced operations for solid wastes Gasification and RDF production
9 Innovative operations for solid wastes Innovations in digesters: multi stage reactors, mixing techniques, methods for increasing organic load capacity and biochemical conversion rate, etc.
10 Homework discussions
11 Innovative operations for solid wastes Innovations in composting: tubular systems, system control, multi stage systems, etc.
12 Innovative operations for solid wastes Innovations in thermal techniques, The effect of the system dimensions on the operation of the system and the system costs.
