General Description

History

New technologies can be used widely in this sector thanks to competitive market circumstances that are based on technology. This improvement may change the sector s technical background. The sector has started to need educated and trained people because of this technological development. The foundry education is run by the colleges in university levels in our country. This program was opened in İzmir Dokuz Eylül Universitys College by the cooperation of YOK and WORLD BANK in 1985. Foundry Technician Program has the whole equipment to apply any foundry technique.

Our purpose: To train up technicians who can inquire, follow technology, think scientifically and who has the ability of problem solving and decision-making. The students who have completed their education can be technicians in the units such as production design, molding, melting, laboratories and quality control. Moreover, they can found institutions such as steel-iron companies, jewelry, art foundry, etc. thanks to their knowledge.

Specific Admission Requirements

Graduates of related vocational high schools gain right to enrol the programme without taking any examinations. Other high school graduates need to take the transition to Higher Education Examination conducted by the Student Selection and Placement Centre and have to obtain adequate score to enrol.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate. The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management.

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK) The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in Graduate Transfer Guide and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam. According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The student must complete 2 years of study acquiring 120 (ECTS) credits. This degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum, compulsory 40 days of internship and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00/4.00 and no failing grades.

Profile of the Programme

In the program, theorical lectures that involve basic informations about casting and industry are given in the classes while application lectures are given in the program workshop. Students complete the application lectures by having industrial application for 8 weeks (40 working day obligatory) in the second year. The language of education is Turkish in Foundry Program. 50 students at first grade(Formal edu.) eveningeducation 35 Two lectureres take part in the program. There is one workshop available for the education and in this workshop which is established according to the Institute of Higher Education and World Bank Project, there are several tools available for applications. Many private sector firms and public institutions provide applications and technical travels for students.

6   Students can understand technicaldrawing and can make part and model design.
7   Sudents have the ability to make all the experiments in the related area.
8   Sudents have the ability to follow the related information and technological developments in the area by using a foreign language.
9   Students have the ability to reach the information and make investigation and use the related information and documents with this aim.
10   Students have the ability and necessity to learn.
11   Students have the ability to use design programs and make analysis in the related area.
12   Students have the ability to work efficiently on a specific issue alone or in a team and they have the ability to have the responsibility in gaining information.
13   Students will know the basic principles about Management and will have the ethical responsibility in the related area.
14   Students have the ability to have the necessary information and conscience in issues such as health of workers, security of laboratuars, quality management and processes and environmental protection.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

This degree enables the holder to exercise the profession.
Our department has an important role in supplying manpower in the industry as there is no industry-based program in Turkey. This increases the possibility of the graduates recruitment. Most of our students can be technicians in the units such as production design, molding, melting, laboratories and quality control in foundry factories. These factories are steel iron companies, jewelry, machine manufacturing, statue and arts foundry. On the other hands, our graduate students can found their own company thanks to the knowledge they acquired in the college.

Access to Further Studies

Graduated students may apply to bachelors programmes in related fields of study such as Metallurgy, Material and Manufacturing Engineering Departments in the Faculty of Engineering by an examination administered by the Student Selection and Placement Centre.
In addition, they have a choice to apply to bachelor's degree completion programmes in related fields of study such as Economics and Business Administration Departments of the Open Education Faculty in Distance Education System.

The courses in the curriculum belong to their semester. There is no prerequisite course in the curriculum. In the second class, students can perform industrial based learning (40 days-compulsory) lesson in the foundry industries, jewelry and metal industries which quality control and production department.
