General Description

History

Dokuz Eylül University Graduate School of Social Sciences Graduate Department of Women's Studies was founded in 2013. In the 2021-2022 academic year, doctoral programme in Women's and Family Studies was established. By the nature of the Department of Women's Studies, the structure, content, and teaching staff of the Women's and Family Studies Doctorate Programme have been created with an interdisciplinary perspective. In this context, it is expected that students who have completed two semesters of courses with the wide elective course catalog offered by the Programme will specialize in a subject they are interested in at the dissertation stage. The Programme aims to train professionals with high social responsibility and awareness who can propose theoretical and practical solutions to the issues of women, family, and gender equality. The language of instruction is Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma; a minimum Cum. GPA of 80/100 or 3/4; a minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field or GRE/GMAT equivalent; a minimum score of 55 from the Foreign Language Exams (ÜDS/KPDS/YDS/e-YDS/YÖKDİL) or from equivalent foreign language proficiency exam approved by OSYM. Transcript; a minimum score of 75 from the graduate school academic proficiency exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate. The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commissions and approved by the management.

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
Previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

4 years, 2 semesters per year,16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

It is aimed to train Ph.D. graduates who are able to synthesize accumulated and new knowledge in the field of women's and family studies with an interdisciplinary perspective and improve their know-how, who have an independent and critical point of view and are able to analyze subjects in the field of women's and family studies from historical, theoretical and conceptual angles and have scientific ethics and morals; and are able to produce scientific studies contributing to the literature.
In the Ph.D. Programme of Graduate Department of Women s and Family Studies at Dokuz Eylül University, there are 27 teaching staff. There are 40 computers available for the use of students and classes between 8.30 and 17.00 every week day. Besides, computer labs, wireless internet connection gives support to students for their thesis, projects and academic studies. The language of instruction is Turkish.

5   To be able to analyze the sources of discrimination that women are exposed to in social life and to propose solutions,
6   To be able to analyze public policies and policy outcomes for women at national and international level,
7   To contribute to the literature on women's studies by means of academic studies that consider national and international scientific publications and social changes,
8   To be able to carry out independent research in the field of women's studies by integrating the knowledge gained from different disciplines with the field of expertise.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

They can be employed in the central and provincial organizations of public institutions and organizations, especially the Ministry of Family and Social Services, in public and private sector organizations that provide research and consultancy services on women, family, and gender equality, in non-governmental organizations, foundations, associations and various positions in international organizations. In addition, if they meet the necessary conditions, they can be employed as experts and in other academic positions at universities.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates may apply to post doctorate studies.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

Women's and Family Studies Ph.D. Programme obligates 1 obligatory and 3 elective courses and also seminar, field study, and thesis study. There are 25 elective courses for two semesters. There is no pool of compulsory or elective courses offered by the University. There are no prerequisite courses. All the courses are based on semester credit system. The principal aim of the courses is to get the students equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies regarding the historical, economic, fiscal, legal, institutional, psychological, sociological, literary, and cultural aspects of gender equality, women's and family studies.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Evaluation and assessment methods for each course is defined in the the Course Description Form which is prepared by related faculty member / s and included in the information package. Exams and course success notes is subject to the relevant articles of the DEU Regulation on Graduate Education.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (57 ECTS), a field study (18 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS) and thesis (162 ECTS), in total 240 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
