General Description

History

Dokuz Eylul University Graduate School of Social Sciences Islamic History and Arts program aims to educate high level researchers within the related branches of Islamic History and Arts who are able to get and produce academic knowledge within scientific criteria; able to research and analyze in national and international levels; able to share the knowledge with the shareholders and whose ability of analysis are developed. The Program includes the sub-fields of Islamic History, Turkish-Islamic Arts History, Turkish-Islamic Literature and Turkish Religious Music. Masters degree is available in all sub-fields above. Language of education and instruction is Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines, Transcript, Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first cycle cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. The exceptions to the requirements of ALES and Foreign Language Proficiency scores is announced by the Graduate School. However, ALES requirement is waived for the admissions to the second cycle graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test as well as for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

2 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

1   A student enrolled in this program; Gains the ability of use and being familiar to classical sources of sub-branches of the History and Arts of Islam Department,
2   Gains the ability of following the contemporary sources in native and foreign languages related to the field and of benefiting from these sources,
3   Meets with the problems of the field and gains the ability of critical thinking and point of view,
4   Gains the ability of re-interpreting and reproducing the knowledge which is learnt during the MA program,
5   Gains the ability of forming the topic in academic studies and of composing it in a logical framework,
6   Gains the ability of benefiting from technological facilities (press, visual, audio, etc ) for accessing and using the academic studies during the MA program,
7   Gains the ability of keeping scientific, cultural and ethical values in these academic studies and of internalizing them,
8   Benefits from the theological and other sciences and has an open-mind view to interdisciplinary approaches,
9   Gains the ability of independently conducting a study requiring expertise in the field of Islamic history and arts,
10   Comprehends that Islamic culture and civilization is a whole field with its sciences, history, arts, music and literature and keeps studying in this context.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

There are 2 required courses in each semester in Masters Degree Program in Islamic History and Arts. Other courses are elective. There are no pre-requisite courses in the program. The students who pass all the courses in 2 semesters are required to prepare a seminar study. Right after the study, they prepare and defend their MA thesis.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Masters Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 55 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS) and field study (2 ECTS) and thesis (60 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
