Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide students with the ability to explain the basic concepts related to statistics, to collect, analyze and interpret data using statistical methods and to enable students to apply these skills to business problems.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Compile and interpret data using numerical methods.
2   Shows graphically the data set given by their frequency.
3   Categorizes the variables according to their characteristics.
4   Learns the central tendency and change measures.
5   Learns the basic concepts of probability theory.
6   Identify the sample representing the mainstream.
7   Understands the importance of parameter estimation.
8   Determines the confidence intervals in accordance with the purposes and establishes and tests the hypotheses.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction to Statistics: Definition, subject and application areas of statistics, basic concepts in statistics, variable types, qualitative and quantitative variables, statistical series, classification of statistical series, displaying statistical series with graphics.
2 Central Tendency Measures: Arithmetic mean, weighted mean, geometric mean, squared mean, harmonic mean, mode, median, divider concepts.
3 Central Tendency Measures: Arithmetic mean, weighted mean, geometric mean, squared mean, harmonic mean, mode, median, divider concepts.
4 Variability Measures: Range of variation, standard deviation, variance, coefficient of variation, skewness and kurtosis measures.
5 Probability Theory: Basic concepts of probability, probability definitions, dependent and independent events, probability calculation rules, Bayes theorem, counting rules, conditional probability.
6 Probability Theory: Basic concepts of probability, probability definitions, dependent and independent events, probability calculation rules, Bayes theorem, counting rules, conditional probability.
7 Mid-Term Exam.
8 Random Variables and Probability Distributions: Continuous random variables and probability distribution, Normal distribution.
9 Random Variables and Probability Distributions: Continuous random variables and probability distribution, Normal distribution.
10 Random Variables and Probability Distributions: Discrete random variables and probability distributions: Binomial distribution and Poisson distribution.
11 Random Variables and Probability Distributions: Discrete random variables and probability distributions: Binomial distribution and Poisson distribution.
12 Hypothesis Testing: Setup stages of hypothesis testing, types of hypothesis testing, unidirectional hypothesis testing, bidirectional hypothesis testing, types of errors in hypothesis testing, hypothesis testing related to the single population average,hypothesis testing on the ratio of population.
13 Statistical Forecasting: Types of statistical forecasting, point estimation of population average and population ratio, interval estimation of population average and population ratio, interval estimation of differences between averages and rates.
14 Statistical Forecasting: Types of statistical forecasting, point estimation of population average and population ratio, interval estimation of population average and population ratio, interval estimation of differences between averages and rates.
15 Final Exam.
