Course Objective

It is to consider the relation between history and philosophy and to observe history philosophically.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   recognize the main difference between historical knowledge and philosophical knowledge
2   understand the differences between linear view of history and cyclical understanding of history
3   know the contribution of Aristotle to the debate on history
4   understand the Christian view of history
5   apprehend the contemporary attempts to go beyond the linear and cyclical dichotomy

5 Philosophy of History as a Discipline: Rousseau, Voltaire, Isellin, Wegelin, Köster
6 History and Understanding; Philosophy of Herder
7 Kant and hypothetical Understanding of history
8 Schiller and Philosophy before German Idealism
9 German Idealism: Fichte, Schelling and Hegel: history and reason
10 Romantic Philosophers
11 German History School: Droysen, Sybel, Treitschke, Ranke. Right and left Hegelians
12 Positivist and Marxist understandings of history
