Course Objective


The aim of this course is to emphasize the historical development of the Turkish States in Anatolia after the acceptance of Islam in terms of Book Arts; to examine the main miniature styles and the interactions of different styles; to comment on these interactions; and to realize original miniature designs with the help of visual resources.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   After the education given with this course, the students are supposed to be informed of the image use in common ornament trends in Early Islam States and in architecture, or daily used stuff,
2   be informed of the history of Book Arts beginning with the paper using in Islam States, and learn the main styles in this field,
3   know the historical development of the Book Arts production in Seljuk Period; and know the forms and compositions of the writings with miniature in early periods,
4   examine the change in the sense of ornament and description because of Mongol invasion in Anatolia in comparison with the styles of other periods,
5   know the research and examination methods to examine the written works in collections in museums and libraries,
6   make an original miniature design using theoretical knowledge and visual resources they have gained during the education.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

In this course, we emphasize the historical development of the written works with miniature and ornament in Early period of Islam, and introduce the main miniature styles. After being informed about the main resources on the subject, the students will be motivated to a library research to make a resource. They will also be asked to make a presentation to have a comment on the research methods and their knowledge.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

The research scanning and the presentation quality of the students will be an important criteria in evaluation. They will also be observed while answering the questions in the lessons and participating the discussions after the lessons. Their creativity and originality will also be taken into consideration.

Assessment Criteria

The mid-term exam, the final exam, presentation and projects will be evaluated out of 100, and the average will be out of 100.

After the theoretical knowledge will be given both orally and written, the practices will be made one-to-one with the students. The students are informed about the next lesson s subject and are expected to make a pre-study about it.
