Course Objective

To give students the ability to realize four-part (SATB) harmony using triads and their inversions.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Apply harmonic realization, either with figures or without figures, over the bass and under the soprano.
2   Generate triads, Dominant Seventh or Ninth chords including their inversions and use them in four-part texture.
3   Analyze stylistically Baroque, Classical, and Romantic Period works
4   Analyze harmonically Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Impressionist works explaining the findings using Roman numerals and figures.
5   Define harmonic approaches used in Jazz music.

Lectures
In-class lectures are carried out through the harmonic examples written on the music staff board by the instructor and through varied and individual realizations of students.

Homework Assignments
Homework assignments aim that students thoroughly comprehend the subject matter covered in-class lectures and consist of examples prepared by the instructor.

EXAMS: Two exams (midterm and final) will be held during and at the end of the semester; a student will earn 100% of his/her grade through these exams. Questions will include topics covered in classes. Students are required to answer the questions on exam sheets handed out by the instructor.
