Course Objective

The aim of this course is to introduce basic concepts concerning with knowledge and in Islam and also to develop views about the problems of philosophy of science, philosophy and theology. The basic subjects of this course are concept of science, the nature of human being, the possibility of knowledge, the value of scientific knowledge, their quality, the conditions of natural sciences and ways of proving.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   The student will be acquainted with the cconcepts concerning with science and knowledge and their reason of existence in Islam.
2   The student will be able to explain classical classifications of sciences and their contents
3   The student will comprehend debates, differences and problems about sciences
4   The student will understand different ideas about place and function of natural sciences among Islamic sciences and differentiate, evaluate and relate these different ideas
5   The student will be acquainted with the critiques about content and method of natural sciences.
6   The student will improve the ways of reasoning on the effects of philosophical debates on the history of science and culture of Islam

1 The concepts of knowledge and science in Islamic Thought.
2 The epistemological basis of science: The nature and skills of human being, the possibility of knowledge and its value
3 The quality, verification and condition of knowledge from the point of view of Islamic Science
4 The views of some influential philosophers of Islam about the method and definition and content of philosophy and natural sciences
5 classification of knowledge and sciences with regard to their subject, human skills and educational procession.
6 The idea of knowldege in Philosophy of Islam and theology
7 The classification of sciences in Islam Rhazes, Al- Khwarizmi
8 Mid term
9 Farabi's and al- Kindi's classificartions of sciences
10 Sciences and methodologies in the letters of Brethren of Purity
11 Avicenna's Philosophy of science
12 The value of science in al- Ghazali and his evaluation of sciences
13 The ideas pf Averroes on the methodology of natural sciences
14 Comparison and evaluation of different philosophies of sciences

The students will improve their skills and information on the history of Islamic thought and they will be able to evaluate their knowledge with historical philosophical problems.

Assessment Criteria

The success of student is being determined by reference to his or her performance of mid term, final exam and course performance.
