Course Objective

This course aims at providing a comprehensive survey of the history of pure and applied sciences in Islam; Muslim contributions in science; the role of Muslims in the history of sciences; the axiological background of science in Islam; how the classical works of science made an impact on the emergence of modern science.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To provide a better understanding of the dynamics of the development of science in Islamic history.
2   To comprehend that science develops within a worldview and ideal perspective.
3   To be familiar with the leading scientists in the history of Islam.
4   To learn about theories and tools developed by Muslim scientists.
5   To develop an understanding of the development of science not only in numeric framework but also a cosmological and ontological context.

5 Leading figures of science in history of Islam (al-Masudi, Ibn Sina, Ibnu l-Haitham, al-Biruni)
6 Leading figures of science in history of Islam (al-Majriti, Ömar Hayyam, Ibn Rüshd, N. Tusi)
7 History of Cosmology, Geography and Nature in Islam
8 Midterm-exam
9 History of Physics in Islam
10 History of Mathematics in Islam
11 History of Astronomy in Islam
12 History of Humanities in Islam
13 Alchemy (Simya) in Islam and its influence to the West
14 The decline of Islamic science: internal and external factors. Islamic science and its encounter with modern Western science: the Ottoman experience and surviving elements of Islamic science in contemporary Muslim world.
