Course Objective

It is aimed to teach the flexional and derivational features (bound/unbound, inflexional), to identify the word types and to comprehend the sentence structure and to realise the ways/methods of neologism to student. Moreover it is aimed for the students to understand the flexional and derivational features, sentence construction of Turkish and by working on samples and reporting them, to identify the stems, affixes of Turkish and evaluate the produced language element and to find the Turkish equivalents of the foreign words by using the acquired knowledge.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Realise the basic concepts of Morphology
2   Explain the relationship between morphology and linguistics by examples
3   Create an outline of a morphological study
4   Specify the sentences structures, flexional and derivational features, the word types of the languages (specifically Turkish)
5   Derive/Produce new word in Turkish
6   Evaluate and criticise a morphological study
7   It is expected from a student to hold a linguistic morphological analysis with the help of a given data

1 The definition of morphology, Introduction to morphology, bound/unbound morphemes, inflexional and derivational morphemes. Allomorphs
2 Words and phrases. Word types and word formation methods
3 Morphophonetics, morphosyntax. Morphological typology. Universals and the concept of gloss
4 Bound and unbound morphemes in Turkish. The word structure of Turkish. Flexions and derivations in Turkish.
5 The order of the mophemes in Turkish. Word formation process in Turkish. The morphological categories in Turkish.
6 Word classes and affixes in Turkish.
7 Recent and contemporary approaches in morphology
8 The morphological analysis of the languages of different language families.
9 Morphological analysis that aims to identify the morphological differences between Turkish and the other languages
10 Creating an artificial language I
11 Creating an artificial language II
12 Creating an artificial language III
13 Creating an artificial language IV
14 Creating an artificial language V
