Course Objective

The course aims to provide an introduction to cultural tourism and its relations with heritage, since cultural tourism as a growth market segment offers new opportunities for the economic revival of historical cities, but at the same time, threatens the cultural resources. The main discussions cover the tangible and intangible resources of heritage, heritage industry, cultural tourism, creative industry, authenticity, tourismification, dynamics of a tourism erosion process and cultural policy. This course examines the relations between heritage conservation and tourism development and intends to stimulate the debate on urban planning concepts and strategies.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   to introduce the student the concept of tourism and its implementation in the growing culture sector from a conservation perspective
2   to give students further training on analysis and investigation of cultural tourism policy, promotion and practice in Turkey and other countries and on relations of these with a broader conceptual framework of heritage
3   to give the students the ability to interpret contemporary knowledge on heritage tourism and its implications
4   to develop the students appropriate research and analytical skills as well as their critical assessment skills.
