Course Objective

General geology and basic mineralogy subjects to teach mineral-rock naming and classifications in geosciences for students, who are registered to Department of Natural Building Stones and Gemstones programs, other than Geology, Geophysics and Mining Engineering departments. Briefly: What is a mineral What is a rock Distributions of minerals and rocks at the earth s crust. Descriptions and classifications of minerals and rocks common in the nature. Studying of hand specimens in laboratories, parallel with theoretical subjects, will provide practices and skills for macroscopic descriptions of common minerals and rocks.

3   Able to test rocks according to their mineralogical characteristics

2 Internal and surface processes 2.1. Plates and plate tectonics. Plate movements and classification of the plate boundaries 2.2. Plate tectonics and earthquakes 2.3. Deformation of the Earth: plate tectonics and mountain building, folds, faults and joints 2.4. Weathering, steams, ground water, the oceans, glacier, wind, erosion and its geologic process 2.5. Mass wasting and factors that control mass wasting
3 Chemical compositions of the Earth and crust 3.1. Distribution of the elements in the Earth crust 3.2. Structure of atom and chemical bonds 3.3. Coordination of ions and atomic packing 3.4. Nomenclature of matter, atom, element, mineral, crystal and rock. Laboratory study related the topic.
