Course Objective

Students will examine the relationship between the structural system and architectural design; To enable them to evaluate their own project designs in this context, with theoretical information on architectural structure design and discussions on sample projects.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. To have knowledge about the development of architectural structures in the historical process,
2   2. To be able to understand the effects of material selection and construction method on the structure,
3   3. To have knowledge about new and innovative structural system designs and their contributions to architectural design,
4   4. To be able to read and evaluate the relationship between architectural design and structure,
5   5. To be able to produce comments on the effect of the structure of an architectural product on the architectural design.

1 Introduction - Information on the aim, scope and methodolgy of the course. - Comments and general evaluations on the relationship between the Structural System and Architectural Design.
2 Historical Review - The evolution of structural systems from the first shelters in the historical process to the wide spans, increasing heights and complexity of modern architecture Articles related to the subject will be given.
3 Classification of Structural Systems - Classification of load-bearing systems in terms of material properties and dimensional properties of the elements that constitutes the system. - Classification of load-bearing systems in terms of geometric properties and spanning wide.
4 Construction Systems - Traditional, Conventional and Advanced Construction Systems - Relationship between Construction System and Structural system Definition of Homework Assignment
5 Concept of Architectural Structure relationship between structural system and architectural design style - Readings/evaluations through examples
6 Concept of Architectural Structure relationship between structural system scheme and space organization - Readings/evaluations through examples
7 Midterm Exam
8 Innovative and multi-layered design approaches in Architectural Structures -Current design parameters in structural system design -1
