Course Objective

Although it is preferred that historical buildings be conserved with their initial uses, the changing social and living conditions from time to time make this impossible and they may be considered with their secondary use. The scope of the course is to examine samples of buildings considered with their secondary use and to discuss criteria in assigning uses.The suitability of the new function to the building in different contexts and the success of the restoration are discussed.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to define the reasons necessitating the re-functionalization of historical structures.
2   Ability to explain the approaches towards defining the new functions of historical structures.
3   Ability to explain the elements affecting the re-functionalization of historical structures.
4   Ability to compare the examples of the structures equipped with the same unique function but considered on basis of different functions.
5   Ability to discuss the compatibility of the new function with the unique function and structure.
6   Ability to communicate a research about a refunctionalized historical building in visual, written and oral form using up-to-date technology. .

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

* Literature research and archive inquiry
* Field Study (on-site observation and examination) - (Since it is possible to conduct the course online in the Fall Semester of the 2021-2022 Academic Year, it is planned to document the area with tools such as photographs and videos, and to carry out follow-up examinations through the said documents, using maps and resources that can be accessed over the internet if necessary).
* Questionnaire study and oral history research - (In the fall semester of the 2021-2022 Academic Year, the level of use will be determined in line with the constraints created by COVID19 period).
- Providing information with verbal and visual presentations.
- On-site observation, examination, discussion within the scope of technical trip - (It will probably be held as a virtual trip in the Fall Semester of the 2021-2022 Academic Year).

The students are expected to be sensitive to their environment and be observatory within the context of changes and transformations particularly in historical buildings besides participating in the course actively.

Informational aspect of learning outputs (LO1, LO2) are measured by midterm exam, final assignment and class participation while comprehension aspect (LO3) is measured by midterm exam, assignment, class participation and final assignment; application aspect (LO6) is measured by assignment, final assignment and class participation; analysis aspect (LO4, LO5) is measured by final assignment, class participation and assignment; evaluation aspect (LO4) is measured by midterm exam, assignment, final assignment and class participation.
Evaluation regarding the class participation shall be determined by student's attendance, active participation in the discussions during the class and qualitative contribution in this context.
