Course Objective

To understand the fundamental concepts about philosophy, to explain the relations between science and philosophy, to grasp the basic areas of philosophy

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Learn the basic properties of philosophical reflection.
2   Comprehend the differences between philosophy and religion, art, and science.
3   Explain the basic subjects of philosophy as being, knowledge and value.
4   Conceive the basic subjects and problems of philosophy of religion.
5   Analyse and learn the basic subjects and problems of metaphysics.

1 Basic properties, concepts and definitions of philosophy
2 Differences and similarities between philosophy and science, religion, art
3 Subjects and main areas of philosophy (1): Knowledge (epistemology and philosophy of science), being (metaphysics and philosophy of religion)
4 Subjects and main areas of philosophy (2): Value (ethics, aesthetics, political philosophy)
5 Basic problems of philosophy of science
6 Theological and atheological arguments
7 Basic concepts and problems of metaphysics: Classical metaphysics of substance and process philosophy
8 Mid-Term exam
9 Difference between morality and ethics; the sources and types of morality
10 Descriptive ethics, normative ethics and meta-ethics
11 Examples to the normative theories: eudaemonist ethics, deontologic ethics, virtue ethics, utilitarianism
12 Practical ethics. Euthanasia, ecological ethics, medical ethics, human rights, etc.,
13 Philosophical Basis of Education: Main Currents in the Philosophy of education
14 Ethical and political aspects of education
15 Final Exam.
