Course Objective

to deal with the historical process of Christianity in Antiquity and Late Antiquity with its theological and historical aspects, to introduce the doctrine of christology, to interpret the rise and disintegration process of the church in the context of its causes and consequences, to understand the relations of Christianity with the Roman administration, its transformation into the state religion and the period of councils

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Christology: Introduction to christology as a discipline of theological debates about Jesus, christological debates within the church, and the disintegration of Christianity
2   Policies of the Roman administration on Christianity: Church-state relations in the first three centuries, church policies of the political authority during and after the reign of emperor Constantine the Great (306-337), the integration of Christianity with the Roman administration, becoming the state religion and the conversion of the church into an institution affiliated to the Roman administration
3   Religious Movements and Sects: The theological acceptances and adventures of the religious movements that emerged in Antiquity and Late Antiquity and interpreted under Christianity, and the sects that became permanent with the subsequent divergences
