General Description

History

Medical Physics Department was established at the Institute of Health Sciences as an interdisciplinary department in 2006. The department faculty consists of the members from the Departments of Radiation Oncology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiology from The Medicine Faculty and also from the Physics Department of Science Faculty. The main objective of the program, the required contributions to scientific issues related to the medical physics capable of efficient and effective work discipline has gained the power to educate people with entrepreneurial skills. Doctoral degree is covered courses and research for four-year program. The first two years taking courses related to the field of specialization and thesis preparation period. In addition to the compulsory courses in the curriculum, students specialize on the appropriate area, is an interdisciplinary elective courses. The program language is Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma. Minimum GPA 80/100 or 3/4, minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related fields,or 50 in graduate medical residency examination (TUS) minimum score of 55 from the Foreign Language Exams (UDS/KPDS) or the equivalent exams scores obtained fromTOEFL/IELTS/etc, and being successful at the science examination of the Institute in the related fields (minimum score of 70)

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

A successful student who has completed at least one semester at any postgraduate programme may be admitted to an institute at the University by lateral transfer. Requirements for admission of students by lateral transfer are determined by the Board of Directors of the Institute.Students who have matriculated after they have successfully passed the postgraduate entrance exam may be exempted from the courses they have already taken in other institutes upon the proposal of the relevant department and the approval of the Board of Directors of the Institute. However, the total credits of the exempted courses cannot exceed 1/3 of the credits required to finish the relevant programme.

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program is comprised of courses, (at least 78 ECTS), field study (12 ECTS) and thesis (150 ECTS), in total 240 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.

Profile of the Programme

The objective of this program is to provide advanced medical physicist to qualify and improve the diagnostic and treatment related devices, quality control, quality assurance, to have knowledge of radiation dosimetry, radiation protection, and to research on various fields of medical physics.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Having advanced knowledge about the principles of the working of diagnostic and therapeutic equipments and having able to perform them.
2   Having advanced knowledge about specification and acceptance testing, quality assurance and calibration of imaging equipments and having able to perform them.
3   Having advanced knowledge about specification and acceptance testing, quality assurance and calibration of equipments using in radiation oncology and having able to perform them.
4   Having advanced knowledge about radiation dose measurement and calculation and having able to perform them.
5   Having advanced knowledge about radiotherapy planning manually and computer aided and having able to perform them.
6   Designs, makes and improves material and apparatus that use in diagnostic and therapy
7   Provides quality insurance and radiation safety
8   Having advanced knowledge about obtaining, archiving and transmitting of the medical images and having able to perform them.
9   Trains of physicist, residents, radiological technologists and /or other allied health professionals working in diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, radiation oncology.
10   Educates of health professionals in diagnostic imaging physics and radiation effects
11   Having able to know national and international official subjects and rules.
12   Accessing to scientific information related to research area; assessing and applying
13   Carrying on a research individually by using the knowledge related to specialization area
14   Recording research data, analyzing, assessing and translating them regarding ethical issues
15   Being able to communicate with other teams, leaders and specialists which are related or unrelated to area of interest
16   Having the ability of oral and written presentation in mother tongue and foreign language
17   Following up-to-date occupational topics
18   Innovating the literature by making a publication of a research related to medical physics

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

Every student must register to total of 30 ECTS. 150 out of 240 ECTS must be thesis studies. Throughout PhD study, each student must collect 90 ECTS (including 12 ECTS of Specialty Area course) in 3 semesters. During course period of PhD study, every student should enroll to at least 20 ECTS of common elective courses (such as, Research culture, research methods and transferrable skills) and at least 20 ECTS more from discipline based and laboratory skill courses. Also, student may enroll to a common elective, discipline based and laboratory skill courses in a different institute or university to complete 20 ECTS. Every student must register to Thesis related reseach topic I in first semester and Thesis related reseach topic II in second semester. Furthermore, during course period , each student should attend to a Ethics course or training.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The assessment criteria for each course are defined in the Course Description Form included in the information pack prepared by the faculty member/members. The relevant items of the DEU Undergraduate, Graduate Education-Training and Exam Regulations and Instutie Examination Regulations apply in relation to exams and course grades. To be successful in this course must be received at least 75.
