Course Objective

In order to meet the requirement for effectively communicating and operating within the multi-disciplinary cancer treatment team, to gain a basic understanding of the fundamentals of cancer development, diagnostics and treatment and to have the competency in terms of knowledge and practice in the field of the medical physics in contemporary radiotherapy.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to participate in a multidisciplinary radiation oncology team with respect to the communication and exchange of relevant patient information;
2   Demonstrate a basic understanding of the development, the nature of the various forms of cancers, their molecular and cellular features;
3   Demonstrate a basic understanding of diagnostics and staging of cancer;
4   Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of various cancer treatment options (surgical, medical and radiation oncology);
5   Ability to integrate knowledge of multi-modal therapy into the planning of radiation therapy of cancer patients.

1 Introduction: Carcinogenesis (oncogenes, supressor genes), major signaling patways of importance for response to radiation
2 Principles of diagnostics and staging of cancer; patways of tumor dissemination
3 Principles and modalities of cancer treatment
4 Principles of radiotherapy planning (target volumes, organs at risk and dose-volume spesification)
5 Head and neck cancers and principles of treatment
6 Throracic neoplasms and principles of treatment
7 Gastrointestinal neoplasms and principles of treatment
8 Breast cancers and principles of treatment
9 Gynecologic cancers and principles of treatment
10 Genitourinary cancers and principles of treatment
11 Neoplasms of nervous system, osteogenic and soft tissue sarcoma and principles of treatment
12 Meloma and skin cancer; metastatic disease and principles of treatment
13 Lymphomas and principles of treatment
14 Pediatric neoplasms and principles of treatment
