Key Learning Outcomes

1   List scientific journals publishing GIS and GIS-related articles by scanning citation indexes and classify journals into sub-fields of GIS properly.
2   Develop extensions for GIS softwares.
3   Define main motivations of the disciplines using GIS for their problem solving.
4   Assess existing publications, projects, etc. by using critical thinking skills for generating creative solutions and for applying decision making strategies to GIS problems.
5   Define established methods of GIS problem solving by critically evaluating articles, conference proceedings, and research projects and generate genuine solution methods contributing to interdisciplinary collaboration.
6   Design a research article, write it and respond to peer-reviewing.
7   Conduct an original study with GIS tools by applying a strategy related to GIS(or not related to GIS) into a filed other than GIS.
8   Design a solution strategy by developing an original question on a topic not discussed in the field of GIS before.
9   Organize data acquisition, compilation, analysis, interpretation and presentation stages of a research project, carry out or manage any above stages and lead the project team when necessary.
10   Develop an approach to the problems to be solved in interdisciplinary interaction using GIS perspective and establish a dialogue to understand the demands of other disciplines.
11   Express her/his thoughts in project application panels, scientific conferences, thesis defense committee, etc. and discuss in scientific methodological terms.
12   Apply scientific developments in GIS to the solution of social problems.
13   Relate and interpret any social, cultural and economic development within GIS field and transfer knowledge related to GIS in written and oral way using ICT.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of the Program have employment opportunities in relevant units of municipalities, public authorities, and private sector in accordance with their knowledge and skills. Municipalities, Land Registry and Cadastre, General Directorate of Highways, General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works, General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration, Presidency of Disaster and Emergency Management and their regional offices are the examples of the organizations where our graduates undertake responsibilities.

Access to Further Studies

May apply to post doctorate programmes.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

In addition to the compulsory courses of the programme, students register to elective courses appropriate for their thesis topic, on the consent of their supervisor. If necessary, on the consent of their supervisor, they can also register to courses from other programmes (from DEU or other universities). It is obligatory to register MAT 5101 Applied Mathematics (3 0 0) or MAT 5102 Numerical and Approximate Methods (3 0 0) or MAT 5151 Methods of Applied Mathematics (3 0 0) or PLN 5093 Applied Mathematics for Planners (2 2 0) with approval of the supervisor. In the case of one of these courses taken during the M.Sc. education, these are not obligatory. The registration must be noticed to the Institute during course registration period by the supervisor.
