General Description

History

The Program aims at providing professionals working at international security sector and those who aim at improving themselves with required knowledge and enabling them to comment on and improve their knowledge and gain specialization. In order to realise this goal the Program aims at improving the candidates abilities of analyzing contemporary security issues, learning the approaches related with these issues, deciphering political, cultural, social and legal backgrounds of security issues.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

1,5 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 90 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

The Program aims at providing those who aim at improving themselves in international security field with required knowledge and enabling them to comment on and improve their knowledge and gain specialization. In order to realise this goal the candidates are aimed at being educated with an interdisciplinary approach, supported by varied field studies, given analytical skills to decipher comtemporary issues.
Currently, the International Relations Department has 23 full-time academic personnel, including 2 professors, 3 associate and 5 assistant professors, 3 lecturers and 10 research assistants. In the past few years, members of the Department have been awarded a series of research fellowships such as Turkish Higher Educational Council, Jean Monnet and the British Academy. There are library, computer lab and wireless internet to support the students.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   To get information about basic theories, concepts and debates on security studies;
2   To develop analytical abilities on the causes of war, the nature of sub-state violence and deterrence, interviews and agreements, security cooperations, military strategy and operations;
3   To reveal national and international security problems by managing advanced research, writing and analytical abilities, to develop approaches for the problems in the agenda;
4   To select appropriate theoretical and methodological instruments, to adopt those instruments comprehensively to the security studies;
5   To follow research plans and analytical methods in order to make original researches in the area of security policy.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The graduates have various job opportunities both in the public and private sectors. The graduates work in military schools, law offices and consulting companies.

Graduates may apply to the related employment positions in their area of specialization.

Obligatory and elective courses continue for one semester. In the second and third semesters, more advanced issues are studies. a. Share of the Obligatory and Elective Courses First Semester: 7 elective, 2 obligatory courses Second Semester: 6 elective, 2 obligatory courses Third Semester: 4 elective, 2 obligatory courses b. Elective Courses in the Department All elective courses are offered by the academic members in the department. The courses are Law of Human Rights, Modernity, Violence and Politics, International Energy Security, Use of Force in International Law, International Migration Law, Law of Armed Conflict and War Turkish Foreign Policy, Civil-Military Relations, International Security Problems, Translatlantic Security, Nationalism and Political Violence, Modern Terrorism, Modern Political Ideologies, Proliferation and Non-Proliferation, Internal and External Security Politics of Turkey, European Union Security, Globalization and Security, Political Extremism. c. Other Features of the Program; ca. Elective courses inside/outside the department: There are no elective courses offered outside the department. Elective courses are 3 hours in a week, and continue for one semester. Elective courses are 7 and 10 ECTS. cb. Prerequisites Graduate students from faculties providing 4 years education and military schools can apply to this programme.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) Non-Thesis Program is comprised of courses (at least 80 ECTS), Term Project (10 ECTS), in total 90 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/ S / TP grades.
