General Description

History

PhD in Audiology was established at 2012 as a multidisciplinary programme of Institute of Health Sciences by the approval of The Council of Higher Education. Academic personnel is from basic science, engineering (Computer Engineering, Electrical-Electronical Engineering) High School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, and Departments of Biophysics and Otorhinolaryngology. Total duration of the program is 4 years (2 year of supervised clinical study,and two to three years of PhD thesis). The language of the programme is Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines. Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first or second cycle (with thesis) cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. However, ALES requirement is waived for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs as well as for the admissions to the graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

A successful student who has completed at least one semester at any postgraduate programme may be admitted to an institute at the University by lateral transfer. Requirements for admission of students by lateral transfer are determined by the Board of Directors of the Institute.Students who have matriculated after they have successfully passed the postgraduate entrance exam may be exempted from the courses they have already taken in other institutes upon the proposal of the relevant department and the approval of the Board of Directors of the Institute. However, the total credits of the exempted courses cannot exceed 1/3 of the credits required to finish the relevant programme.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program is comprised of courses, (at least 78 ECTS), field study (12 ECTS) and thesis (150 ECTS), in total 240 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.

Profile of the Programme

Main target of the Programme is graduate audiologists who can use their skills and abilities for the benefit of society effectively, who developed motives for lifelong learning, who can lead and initiate social and scientific developments, and who can apply diagnostic tests and rehabilitative methods to the patients with hearing, balance or speech disorders. The Audiology Unit, besides teaching activities, actively works on various theoretical and applied research and to create proficiency in planning of research, analyzing and evaluating experimental data, application of appropriate statistical methods and to report the results in scientific format. Programme contains compulsory course of Institute of Health Sciences (4 national credits), compulsory course of Neuroscience department and and elective courses in related neurosience fields. Students may apply for different related courses from different programs and universities.

1   PO1. Acquire advanced clinical audiological knowledge and ability to practice and to comment of the advanced audiologic laboratory techniques.
2   PO2. Be able to know the diversity of biology and genetics of hearing loss.
3   PO3. Capable of advanced knowledge of clinical and experimental audiological procedures.
4   PO4. Be able to take a role in the training of audiologists and audiometrists.
5   PO5. Be able to prepare the settings of a new audiology clinic.
6   PO6. Acquire advanced information of the selecting, fitting of hearing aids, cochlear implants and implantable hearing aids
7   PO7. Be able to gain the principles of the diagnosis and rehabilitation of the vestibular disorders.
8   PO8. Be able to obtain accurate information about hearing and balance function, including via case history interview, and through the appropriate selection and completion of behavioural, electrophysiologic and psychosocial assessments.
9   PO9. Be able to plan, perform and inspect a special rehabilitation program for tinnitus patients.
10   PO10. Acquire advanced theoretical information, evaluation, and performing therapy techniques in speech disorders except developmental or neurological origins.
11   PO11. Be able to critically evaluate the scientific basis for evidence-based information on the audiology.
12   PO12. Be able to apply and manage the audiological process in the newborn hearing screening program.
13   PO13. Be able to get and record appropriate informed consent in the field of audiology.
14   PO14. Acquire the basic information about audiologic equipment and their calibration.
15   PO15. Be able to gain ability to apply, write and present a thesis, and publish in a scientific format.
16   PO16. Be able to perform all necessary behavioral test techniques in normal as well as disordered children.
17   PO17. Be able to perform advanced voice assessments as well as voice rehabilitation techniques in patients.

Graduates may apply to post doctorate studies.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

Every student must register to total of 30 ECTS. 150 out of 240 ECTS must be thesis studies. Throughout PhD study, each student must collect 90 ECTS (including 12 ECTS of Specialty Area course) in 3 semesters. During course period of PhD study, every student should enroll to at least 20 ECTS of common elective courses (such as, Research culture, research methods and transferrable skills) and at least 20 ECTS more from discipline based and laboratory skill courses. Also, student may enroll to a common elective, discipline based and laboratory skill courses in a different institute or university to complete 20 ECTS. Every student must register to Thesis related reseach topic I in first semester and Thesis related reseach topic II in second semester. Furthermore, during course period , each student should attend to a Ethics course or training.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The assessment criteria for each course are defined in the Course Description Form included in the information pack prepared by the faculty member/members. The relevant items of the DEU Undergraduate, Graduate Education-Training and Exam Regulations and Instutie Examination Regulations apply in relation to exams and course grades. To be successful in this course must be received at least 75.
