General Description

History

Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Architecture and Department of Restoration is the oldest and well-established Restoration schools in Aegean Region. It is still one of the well-established restoration schools in Turkey. In this context Department of Restoration; brings professionals and scientists together who has emphasis on Historical Environment and Cultural Heritage, educates architects as conservation specialists who have knowledge and consciousness on local, regional, national and global professional issues among the historical period, raises experts who have the ability to create the necessary basis for data collection, evaluation and interpretation of making decisions on historical buildings and environments by taking environmental and ethic problems into consideration, teaches how to evaluate the available information on Historical Environment, Preservation and Restoration field with dialectical approach, who knows how to use his knowledge, skills and understanding required by the discipline of his professional approach, carries out academic researches on Historical Environment, Restoration and Preservation systematically and critically, to present papers in national and international media, teaches how to develop strategy, policy, implementation plans on his profession and to evaluate the results within this framework. Restoration Department raises preservation specialists , and the graduates have skills and knowledge on documentation of historical environment and produces restoration projects and reports.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines. Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first or second cycle (with thesis) cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. However, ALES requirement is waived for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs as well as for the admissions to the graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students may be accepted for graduate transfer with the approval of the Department Directorate and decision of the Board of Directors of the Graduate School in case the student fulfills the graduate transfer regulations decided by the General Council of the Graduate School. Previously taken courses at another graduate programme with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes with the written request of the students including course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the Department Directorates and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students may have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective by the decision of the Board of Directors.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

"Historic Environment, Research, Conservation and Restoration" department which was established in Ege University faculty of fine arts was the first post-graduate training in İzmir. As a result of changes in Universities by constituting of the Higher Educatio Council, "Historic Environment, Research, Conservation and Restoration" department is became the field of Dokuz Eylül University, Institue of Science, Architecture Department. In this context, some changes was made in training programs. However, as a result of there was not enough lessons in restoration during undergraduate training and requirements of expertise in the field, master program re-arranged as including three semesters of course from two in 1995-96 academic year.

Besides, there is 36 work days long "Restoration internship" during the training intended for preservation, restoration and evaluation of historic building and environment. Restoration internship aims theoretical and pratical knowledge as an integrated process during restoration for students.

The courses of Restoration Program are given by four professors, three of them being from other departments, four associate professors and two associative professors.

For admission to the Restoration Doctorate Program, the students are required to have a Master of Science degree in Architecture.

Restoration Doctorate Program recruits students in the specific dates according to the academic calendar (June-September).

Facilities Of The Department:

The fact that the department is located in İzmir, the center of West Anatolia, and that there are around a large number of antique cities and historical settlements, where the fabric is preserved, allows these areas to be a laboratory and an experimental area in the studies.

The staff and students of the Restoration Doctorate Program uses the classrooms, studios, laboratories, conference hall and other technical facilities of Dokuz Eylül University Department of Architecture. Besides, there is a classroom in the building which is used only by Restoration Program.

10   To present academic papers and publish academic manuscripts in National and International Platforms.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Architecture graduates, who has Ph. D. degree, work wide range areas that profession gives opportunity to perform. Some of them keep going to work academic and start to work as a research assistant in universities.They are also employ different parts of public sector.In addition, employment of graduate students employ as a freelance office architect, project designer, construction site architect and designer who works on the presentation (3D - three-dimensional presentation, model, etc.).

Hence architecture is a wide range working area and our instution is preferred, graduates do not have problem of unemployment.

Due to restoration requires expertise graduates are expected work at both public sector such as Municipality, Vakıflar Genel Müdürlüğü, Preservation Board and projects which is about historic environment preservation and restoration construction sites. Also it is avaliable to work in public and private universities to whom intented to be academician.

Some of graduates orientated in education sector and employed as research assistant and assistant professors. Three of 27 graduate students work as research assistant. One of graduate students who works public sector is employed in Kültür Varlıklarını Koruma Bölge Kurulu and six of rest in municipalities. One graduate works at the Protection Application Audit Bureau that is established under Municipalities. It could be said that all of our graduates that are contacted made their profession, generally directly, a part indirectly carried out tasks intended for the protection, restoration.

In addition to the compulsory courses of the programme, students register to elective courses appropriate for their thesis topic, on the consent of their supervisor. If necessary, on the consent of their supervisor, they can also register to courses from other programmes (from DEU or other universities).

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Related items of Dokuz Eylul University Regulations of Graduate Education and Exams and related items of Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences Regulations of Education and Code of Practicing Exams are applied for the exams and course grades. The course evaluation criteria are defined for each course by the instructor(s) of the corresponding course and are given in the Course Description Form found in the information package.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctor of Philosophy) Programme is comprised of courses (at least 67 ECTS),Ph.D.Seminar (5 ECTS), Ph. D. Research (18 ECTS) / Ph. D. Thesis (150 ECTS) courses, thesis proposal, doctoral qualifying examination and thesis examination with a total credit of 240 ECTS. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50 / 4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.
