General Description

History

Master in Musicology is founded in the end of 1970's, as a part of the Department of Musicology. The program involves courses in musicology as well as supporting courses in the art and theory of music.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines, Transcript, Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first cycle cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. The exceptions to the requirements of ALES and Foreign Language Proficiency scores is announced by the Graduate School. However, ALES requirement is waived for the admissions to the second cycle graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test as well as for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

2 years, 2 semesters per year, 15 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Masters in Musicology program is primarily intended for students who hold a bachelor s degree in Musicology and whose aim is to take action and responsibility with academic competence and specialty in the field of Musicology. The courses in the program are designed specifically to provide the students with a strong foundation in musicology academically.
There are 5 academic members in the department and a computer lab is also available for practical purposes.
Student Exchange and Student Mobility for Placement Programmes are being held in the frame of LLP/Erasmus.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   To grasp the theoretical, procedural and methodological relationships between Musicology and other disciplines (anthropology, sociology, cultural studies etc.).
2   To identify the advanced theoretical, social/cultural, scientific terminologies and concepts related to musicology.
3   To associate the methods and approaches used in musicology with other disciplines.
4   To identify the differences of methodology and techniques between written scientific materials (research reports, papers, thesis, proceedings etc.) and verbal presentations (seminars, symposiums, conferences etc.).
5   To improve the knowledge, skills and competences in the field of musicology based on the competences gained in bachelors' studies.
6   To design and execute all the stages of a musicological research project.
7   To present the results of the research process in written and verbal format.
8   To access and evaluate the printed and online written material which are associated to his/her field of study in national and international levels.
9   To transfer his/her opinions in actively in active discussions internalizing the knowledge production methods and approaches.
10   To communicate verbally and in written form with the specialists in his/her field or in other disciplines, work and take responsibility in team work actively.
11   To communicate verbally and in written form using at least one foreign language as well as following the international literature in his/her field of study.
12   To apply and share the knowledge, skills and competences he/she gained in interdisciplinary research environments within a team.
13   To pass on the knowledge he/she gained to the society.
14   To contribute to scientific improvement in national and international level while being open to new directions in science, internalizing the life-long learning principles and being aware of the sociological and cultural effects of musicological studies.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The regulations for examination and grading are arranged in the fourth part of DEU Graduate School of Fine Arts Educational and Examinational Regulations. The lowest grade to be successful in a credit course is 75. Detailed assessment methods and criteria for courses are explained in syllabi.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) Programme with thesis is comprised of at least 7 courses, not being less than 21 national credits, a seminar and specialization courses and thesis studies, in total 120 ECTS credits.
