Course Objective

This course is designed for graduate students with a basic knowledge of biology. This course will serve as an introduction to advanced principles of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology. It will begin with lectures covering the general organization of the brain including its blood supply. Next basic properties of ion channels, mechanisms of action potential generation and propagation, and principles of synaptic transmission will be covered. In the last part of the course, the basic concepts will be incorporated into a discussion of specific systems such as the motor, sensory, and autonomic nervous systems.Objectives of this course are to learn cellular and anatomically processes of central nervous system and to understand functional organization and processes of nerve system.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To have advanced knowledge about cells of nervous system, their development, organization and multiplication
2   To have advanced knowledge about neurotropic factors, neural gene expression, glial cells, and ion channels
3   To have advanced knowledge about stimulation and transduction at nerve system
4   To learn functional processes of nerve system
5   To learn somatic sensation, vision, hearing, smell, and taste senses
6   To learn processes and the anatomical structures of higher cortical functions, the limbic system, and learning and memory
7   To reach scientific information by literature scanning and interpret them
8   To be eligible to make oral and written presentation

Materials: It is expected that the papers will be read by the assigned date and thatstudents will be prepared to participate in class discussion. Some topics will be decided by the class.Primary literature sources will be used. The papers will be selected by the instructor at the time of the course so that the readings will be current and at the appropriate level of difficulty for each topic. Some examination questions will be based on these additional readings.
