Course Objective

This course will provide an understanding of the science and techniques of molecular and cellular biology, teach the students the current and future advanced therapy strategies. Therefore, principles and practice of cell therapy, including stem cell transplantation, immunotherapy and gene therapy, biological medicines and other advanced therapies will be taugt. Application themes include advanced therapies such as human stem cell therapy, gene therapy, RNA interference as well as CRISPR technology, biologics and biosimilars, recombinant protein and mAb based biotherapeutics within specific contexts such as neurodegenerative diseases, cancer and regenative medicine.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understand the basic biology and applications of human stem cells.
2   Have knowledge about gene therapeutics.
3   Have knowledge about RNAi interference and CRISPR technologies.
4   Evaluate the Rationale for treating particular diseases by cell and gene therapy.
5   Evaluate the ethics, regulation and monitoring required for clinical studies.

Meaningful learning of the basic concepts given in presentations, association of concepts with each other, establishing the cause-result relationships and making comments by using the information available for problems and evaluating idea generation are carried out with mid-term and final exams, active participation to the lecture, homework.
