Course Objective

To teach the alphabetical structure of Spanish language , the rules of pronunciation in Spanish, basic grammatical features of Spanish, to obtain the ability to express themselves in Spanish-speaking environment, to be able to speak in formal and informal way.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to understand and use the simple phrases and frequently used expressions in daily and working life.
2   Listening comprehension: To be able to catch and report the actual professional dialogues.
3   Reading comprehension: To be able to analyse and report professional short writings, published materials like advertisements, letters.
4   Speaking: To be able to introduce oneself, to be able to describe the surroundings, the objects around him/herself, to be able to roughly tell about his/her work and hobbies, places, an event.
5   Writing: To be able to write a note, message, personal letter.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Spanish Alphabet, reading and pronunciation techniques, basic greetings and farewell messages
2 Masculine and feminine states of adjectives and nouns, conjugation of Ser (to be) verb in present tense, conjugation of regular verbs in present tense.
3 Demonstrative and possessive adjectives, numbers (1-10). Question words and prepositions, examples of how to conjugate verbs in present tense.
4 Prepositions (el, la, los, las), conjugation of Estar, Tener and some irregularr verbs in present tense
5 Cardinal (10-20) and ordinal (1-10) numbers. Build sentences in present tense.
6 Prepositions of place and directions, asking and giving directions, conversations for departure/arrival scenarios from the airport to the hotel.
7 Midterm exam

9 How to tell and ask time, cardinal numbers (20-1,000,000).
10 Reflexive verbs and daily routines. Accent Marks in Spanish.
11 Adjectives for colours, Direct object pronouns (lo, la, los, las). Expressing hobbies and favourite acts using the verb "Gustar".
12 Ordering in the restaurant environment (use of the verb Querer), complaints and payment dialogue.
13 Imperative sentences, conjugationof regular/irregular verbs in imperative statements.
14 Describing people: a person's physical appearance and character
15 Final exam

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

1. Midterm Exam: Midterm exam encompasses the subjects covered in lectures as well as weekly assignments (40%).
2. Final Exam: The exam encompasses all the subjects covered throughout the semester, as well as in-class discussions, applications and case studies (60%).

Assessment Criteria

Exam papers will be evaluated regarding the level of understanding, as well as defining the causality between the basic concepts and issues of the lecture, ability of giving examples and analytical thought, and using relevant terminology.
