Course Objective

This course aims to provide an introduction to the strategic importance of operations and how operations can provide a competitive advantage in the marketplace, the relationship between operations and other business functions, such as marketing, finance, accounting and human resources.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts of operations and how operations can provide a competitive advantage in business enterprises.
2   Have the understanding of environmental friendly products and processes and the importance of recycling in the production process in order to gain awareness of environmental issues.
3   Demonstrate awareness of fundamental information technologies in operations management to have an understanding of the usage of information technologies in operations management.
4   Work effectively as part of a team participating and interacting in the group and demostrate high written and oral communication skills in writing and presenting a report.

1. Mid-Term Exam
Students will be assessed on their knowledge of concepts and theories through multiple choice and problem based written exam.
2. Final Exam
Students will be assessed on their knowledge of concepts and theories through multiple choice and problem based written exam.
3. Written Report (Group Work) and Presentation
Students with groups of four are expected to prepare report on operations management topics determined by the instructor. Each group member is expected to make a presentation via slides.

Assessment Criteria

1. Late submissions of reports will not be graded
2. Reports must be berief not exceeding fifteen pages
3. All group members must contribute to the groupwork and are expected to answer the questions at the end of the presentation.
