Course Objective

To bring the skills of being able to establish the issues of historical environment conservation and being able to document the historical assets of various characteristics, with different methods.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to explain the concepts of environment, historical environment, conservation.
2   Ability to discuss the issues encountered in historical environment conservation.
3   Ability to present the documentation methods.
4   Ability to establish conservation issues on the basis of the selected sample.
5   Ability to make visual, written, oral documentation within the context of the selected sample.

Course Contents

1 Introduction, acquaintance, explanation of the teaching method of the course.
2 Concepts of environment and historical environment.
3 Concept of conservation and reasons why to conserve the historical environment.
4 Methods of conservation. Organizations for the protection of the historical environment.
5 Issues encountered in conserving the historical environment. - Problems arising from environmental conditions.
6 Issues encountered in conserving the historical environment. - Human related problems.
7 Midterm exam.
8 Issues encountered in conserving the historical environment. - functional problems, implementation problems and other problems.
9 Issues encountered in conserving the historical environment. - Problems related to technical, social, economic, planning. UNESCO World Heritage List and our cultural heritage.
10 The concept of documentation as a first step in conservation and reasons of documentation, documentation methods.
11 Case study - Determination of conservation issues and documentation work in the context of the selected sample.
12 Case study - Determination of conservation issues and documentation work in the context of the selected sample.
13 Case study - Documentation work in the context of the selected sample.
14 Discussion related to the case study.
15 General evaluation.
