Course Objective

To explore the social and political thought of the 18th century by looking at original works of the main representatives.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Knows to place the 18th century's social and political thought in the history of social and political htought.
2   Understands the main themes of the social and political thought of the 18th century.
3   Presents the main differences between different schools of the 18th century's social and political thought.
4   Discusses the main methodological difference between social contract theorists and historical school.
5   Knows the differences between different social and political theories within the historical school.
6   Traces the theoretical origins of the historical school in the social and political thought of the 18th century.
7   Understands the foundational role of Montesquieu for the historical school.
8   Knows the structure and the main concepts of Montesquieu's "The Spirit of the Laws".
9   Shows what Hume's claim that politics must be scientific means for the historical school.
10   Understands Adam Smith's social and political theory as a system of modern society.
11   Explores the debate between David Hume and Adam Smith about how to theorise society and the state.
12   Understands Adam Ferguson's approach to the history of civil society.
13   Presents the debate between Adam Ferguson and Adam Smith on the history and structure of civil society.
14   Knows how Hegel tries to develop a synthesis of the theories of the historical school.
