Course Objective

The objective of the course is to deal with the way they organize their operations and the mechanisms they use can be a very important sources of competitive advantage and their success in terms of R&D Organizations and Departments.. This course will provide students with the opportunity by integrating contemporary thinking about organization structure and design with classic ideas and theories Included here are traditional organizational structures like the functional, the divisional by product or region, the matrix, and more modern and innovative ways of organizing like, the process, the circular, the network, and the customer-centric structures. This course also will focus on companies that are successfully using these design concepts in a highly dynamic environment. Students will also examine, diagnose and solve real-life organizational problems using current organizational situation.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understand the importance of organizational structure and design approaches and models in supporting the competitive strategy of a R&D business.
2   Spesify the general principles underlying critical design dimensions
3   Understand how to utilize organizational design principles to keep the design with the needs of the organization , the general principles underling any form of organization
4   Demonstrate the ability to analyze the external and internal organizational environments that are appropriate for each of the critical design dimensions
5   Apply the main principles of organizational structure and the most current and innovative ideas in the design of the structure of R&D units.
6   Demonstrate the ability to strategically lead individuals and teams in a global context as a team member
7   Having ability to collect of data related to organizational structure and desing of AR&GE units, analyze, interprete, and communicate
8   Communicate effectivelly in a variety of modes within a business environment

Course Contents

1 Introduction to organizations and organization theory
2 Designing organizations. The various structural and contextual dimensions, frameworks for how organizational performance and effectiveness is measured.
3 Fundamental organizational structures, their strengths and weaknesses for suitability based on the degrees of environmental uncertainty and complexity, the continuum of organic to mechanistic structures, the interface of the organization s structure with its external environment.
4 External environment, theories of organizational ecosystems, the population ecology model and resource dependency , inter-organizational relations
5 Designing R&D organizations and departments for internal and international environment
6 Manufacturing, service and informational technology, IT for coordination and control in R&D units
7 R&D organizations and departments staff structure, their main positions, tasks and responsibilities depending on their specializations
8 Organization size and organization life cycle, decision making process
9 Managerial roles and teams for organizational design procedure
10 Innovation and Change, Organizational transformation
11 Dealing with crisis and transition structural changes & management.
12 Managing culture and ethical behavior related to structure and design

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This class uses a variety of learning/teaching methods that include the following.
1. Active learning
a. Students make presentations of articles and cases related to organizational structure and design
b. Students are given the opportunity to participate in the organization of the class by designing learning activities like debates, roleplays, games, quizes, etc. that engage their classmates in the learning of the material reviewed in class
2. Case analysis by student teams
a. Classic cases of organizational structures are used
b. Cases of companies that use innovative organizational structures are reviewed

Assessment Criteria

1. Mid-term will be based on understanding, synthesis and evaluation of the material discussed in class.
2. There is a term projectr for this course consisting in the design of the organizational structure of a new business. In this paper ;
Students apply the general principles of organizational structure , use elements of the most innovative forms of organization, test their design against principles of good design
3. Presentations will be assessed on preparation, understanding, knowledge, capacity to structure, oral communication skills, ability to respond to questions and manage discussion.

1. Attending at least 70 percent of lectures is mandatory.
2. Plagiarism of any type will result in disciplinary action.
