Course Objective

Communication Theories I Course considers approaches, theories and models developed in communication and media studies in the relationship with the general social theory. In this sense, while the basic concepts and arguments of the theories appreciated in the course are presented, it is endeavored to make it explicit the historical, cultural and intellectual context in which the theories produced. Thus, the course informs the students about expansions and limitations presented by the approaches, theories and models developed in communication and media studies.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Appreciation of Communication, Media, Means of Mass communication, Communication Theories, Communication studies, Media studies concepts and periodization and classifications concerning communication theories.
2   2. Acquiring knowledge about the research conducted on the means of mass communication.
3   3. Discriminating the basic arguments and representatives of main stream communication theories.
4   4. Discriminating the basic arguments and representatives of critical theories.
5   5. Acquiring critical awareness.
