Course Objective

The aim of this course is to analyze; leadership approaches and the aims and management of leadership behavior and team management formation which is one of the elements of modern management. This course also aims to enable students comprehend, analyze and interpret leadership roles in profit and/or non-for-profit organizations.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Compare knowledge of leadership and team management acquired by total quality management to other concepts and theories, define differences and interpret thoroughly, develop and employ this knowledge.
2   Necessitate information and acquire needed information.
3   Synthesize, analyze and interpret gathered information related to leadership and team management.
4   Consider ethical and scientific values in gathering, evaluation and publication of data related to team work.
5   Build, develop, apply and assess the results of a method to identify and solve the problem related to enhance the efficiency of team management.

1 Introduction to course, fundamental concepts, contents and method of the course.
2 Leadership approaches in management theory (classic theory and evaluation of leadership)
3 Leadership approaches in management theory (neo-classic theory and evaluation of leadership)
4 Leadership approaches/models in the context of modern management approach
5 Group, team concepts, importance and their place in theory
6 Types of teams and factors affecting team formation
7 Team formation process, leader- member relations, role distribution of team members.. (Midterm exam will also be held this week after course hour)
8 Characteristics of efficient teams and types of teams, member-role relations.
9 Leadership and team bond (team-leadership behavior relationship)
10 Effective leadership and effective team bond / Assessment and evaluation of Team Effectiveness 1

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Topics will be analyzed and discussed both theoretically and by case studies. Field study results will be presented in the workshop in the final week of the semester.

Assessment includes; case studies, role playing, discussion, team work, presentation and written examination besides theoretical analysis.

Assessment Criteria

Students will be assessed according to their midterm and final examinations, presentation of term projects and participation (Please see: Course Policies and Rules).

Rules related to midterm and final exams are: Questions are not general but specific, case study analyses should be made by using of proper terminology. Following points will be considered on this matter. Ability to use terminology properly, degree of consistency between cause and effect relationships of concepts. The solution to the problems should be well grounded, scientific, logical and convincing. Readings related to the course and having a grasp of the topics are important.
