Course Objective

Organizations are complex environments. The purpose of this course is to increase our understanding of these complexities and to gain greater agility in finding proactive ways of meeting the challenges they present. The course is built around the two disciplines that specialize in studying organizations: organizational behavior and organizational theory. Getting initial insights into underlying principles and fundamental theories of organizing and organizational behaviour is the main objective. Broadly speaking, students should develop a sense of what falls under the domain of organizational behaviour and organizational theory.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   The learner will know how the basic concepts from leadership, communication and motivation theory apply to organizational leadership
2   The learner will have a multi-dimensional perspective of the contextual variables faced in the management of organizational life
3   The learner will have the ability of reading organizational situations with various scenarios in mind while suspending immediate judgments until a more comprehensive view of the situation emerges
4   The learner will show how these ideas can serve as practical tools for analysis and management of successful organizational situations

Assessment Criteria

1. Assigned readings there will be two long essay examinations in the class; midterm and final exams, based on understanding synthesis and evaluation of the material discussed in class.
1. Each student will prepare and conduct an analysis of a specified number of peer-reviewed journal articles and/or books according to a pre-designated schedule.
2. Presentations will be assessed on preparation, understanding, knowledge, capacity to structure, oral communication skills, ability to respond to questions and manage discussion.
