Course Objective

This course aims to teach students the concepts of restoration and conservation. To make the students understand of the restoration stages of the new and the historic stone buildings. To introduce the students of the tools and methods to clean, repair, preservation and maintenance of the distortions of the stones by natural and man devastation, and by doing this to make them choose the appropriate method by analyzing the structure of stones with the aid of the modern methods.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Defining the concepts of restoration and conservation.
2   To be able to make the preparation stages of the restoration of the stone structures.
3   Natural stone cleaning, protection, maintenance and repair machines, equipment and supplies can be identified.
4   Interpretation of natural stone cleaning methods.
5   To be able to apply natural stone repair techniques.
6   To be able to use consolidation and bonding techniques.
7   Interpretation of the selection criteria and the properties of preventive and maintenance materials.

1 Restoration, protection concepts and the relationships with other disciplines in the construction industry,
2 Restoration of the stone structures, documentation, diagnostic, cleaning, bonding and filling, consolidation or the protection, maintenance concepts,
3 Machines, equipment and materials of natural stone cleaning, protection, maintenance and repairs.
4 Cleaning by water-based materials,
5 Cleaning by alkalis and acids
6 Mechanical cleaning
7 Cleaning by the heat and laser
8 Mid-Exam
9 Natural stones repairing techniques,
10 Consolidation techniques,
11 Bonding techniques,
12 Natural stone restoration and conservation techniques,
13 Maintenance materials and selection of them,
14 Presentation of the student s research assignment
