Course Objective

Know their duties and responsibilities as a medical laboratory technician, medical laboratory to train students mastered the routine practices.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Have the knowledge about to "Medical laboratory technician" the definition,roles and responsibilities, professional standards
2   Have the knowledge about to clinical laboratory operations, laboratory safety and practices
3   Acquires theoretical knowledge and practical skills related to laboratory instruments, equipment, and use of them.
4   Have the knowledge and skills to accept or reject the samples to the laboratory,handling, transmitting, storing of them.
5   Have the knowledge and skills in routine microbiological analysis.
6   Have the knowledge and skills in routine biochemical analysis.
7   Have the knowledge of the clinical laboratory automation and quality control.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Medical laboratory technician definition, duties and responsibilities, by the occupational standards commission (MSK) defined definitions. Laboratory safety (biosecurity) applications, personal protective equipment introduction and applications.
2 Introduction and basic work flows of the clinical laboratory, job descriptions of the personnel working in the laboratory, laboratory informatics, registration and information systems
3 Microscope use and maintenance, media, dyes, chemical room introduction and usage rules
4 Automatic pipettes and their maintenance, glassware introduction and cleaning, sterilization unit workflow, introduction of distilled water units.
5 Applications of basic lab equipment such as centrifuge, spectrophotometer, precision scales, fume hood.
6 Sample taking, sample acceptance / rejection procedures, sample processing, transmission, storage, sowing and culture methods
7 Laboratory measurement and calculations, ratio / concentration / dilution calculations, units, international unit systems
8 Antigen-antibody related analysis methods
9 Blood count and coagulation tests, sedimentation, cultures and antibiotic susceptibility tests, routine and emergency biochemistry analysis, blood gas analysis, drug analysis, urine (routine and 24 hour urine) analysis, manual analysis and specialized tests, sweat test, tests for metabolic diseases related applications
10 Pneumatic system, modular systems, preanalytical module and consolidated laboratory automation applications
11 Quality control, internal and external quality control applications in clinical laboratories
12 Preanalytical, analytical, postanalytical errors, error reporting, corrective and preventive action practices, quality monitoring

To inform the student about the basic concepts of the Medical Laboratory technician, the definition of the profession, the importance and principles of the profession, the application topics and application areas of the profession, the team members and equipment needed within the profession, the duties and responsibilities in the practice of the profession, and routine laboratory practices.
