Course Objective

The aim of this course is to teach matter knowledge and the fundamental laws of chemistry, importance and applications of chemistry in daily life.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to classify the matter according to its properties
2   To be able to choose the appropriate methods for the separation and purification of mixtures and compounds
3   To be able to specify the basic structure of atom
4   To be able to explain the chemical bonds.
5   To be able to use the periodic table.
6   To be able to name inorganic compounds
7   To be able to perform stoichiometric calculation based on chemical equations.
8   To be able to explain the basic properties of solid, liquid and gas.

1 Matter knowledge and separation-purification methods
2 Structure and properties of atom, the concepts of atom, electron, proton, neutron, isotope
3 Electromagnetic radiation, atomic spectrums, atomic number and the Periodic law, quantum numbers, orbitals and Hund's rule
4 Chemical bonding, ionic bonding, covalent bonding, Lewis structures and formal charge
5 Octet rule, intermolecular forces, and metallic bonding
6 Oxidation numbers, comprising inorganic compounds, naming inorganic compounds
7 Mid-Term Exam
8 Mid-Term Exam
9 Chemical equations, mole concept, the percent composition of compounds, derivation of formulas, the problem solving related to chemical equations
10 Gases, pressure units, Boyle's law, Charles' law, Amontons' Law, The ideal gas law
11 Kinetic theory of gases, Gay-Lussac's law, Avogadro's law, Graham's law of diffusion
12 Liquids, evaporation, vapour pressure, freezing point, solutions, colligative properties of solutions
13 Preparation of solution and concentration units, the concepts of percent concentration, molarity, normality, molality, ppm, ppb
14 Solids and their properties, crystals and crystal structures
