Course Objective

Students will be able to recognize the usage requirements for the optical communication system, and apprehend optical communication principles. The properties and types of fiber-optic cable, the parameters that affect the transmission of optic signal, and materials for the optical transmission will be explored.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To explain the basic criterias required for the reflection and refraction of light.
2   To explain the number of modes that exist depends on the dimensions of the fiber-optic cable and the variation of the indices of refraction of both core and cladding across the cross section. The various modes include multimode step index, single-mode step index, single-mode graded index and multimode graded index.
3   To apprehend the propagation and attenuation of optical transmission line and the properties of light-sources and sensors.
4   To be able to select the elements required for system design.
5   To be able to recognize the parameters such as modulation and multiplexing.

2 Optical transmission and other transmission systems: supremacy, the area of operations and comparisons
3 Refraction and reflection of light, Snell s Law and light emission characteristics of fiber-optic
4 The number of modes and the variation of indices
5 Single-mode step index, single-mode dual step index and multimode graded index
6 Entry angle and numerical aperture of optical cable The minimum power to the optical transmitter and receiver
7 Mid-term Exam
8 Mid-term Exam
9 Propagation and attenuation of fiber-optic transmission Wavelength characteristics of an optical signal
10 Optical light sources and their characteristics
11 Raising the weakening optical signals again
12 Accounting optical power budget requirements for FO system

Assessment Criteria

Five learning outputs will be measured by mid-term and final exams. Besides that, weekly assignments will be used to pursue the students' learning achievements.
