Course Objective

To teach and examine printing and dyeing processes to colour textiles; dyestuffs, methods, dyeing-printing techniques and machinery, special printing effects by using visual samples

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   define principles of textile printing and dyeing and differences between them.
2   define textile dyestuffs and their basic principles,and select suitable dyestuff depending on basic properties of fibre/fabric
3   define dyeing-printing methods and technologies.
4   define preperation process of screen depending on technology and differences of their properties.
5   select suitable printing method and technology according to pattern character
6   prepare printing pastes,interpret and use dyeing/printing recipes
7   select special dyeing -printing techniques to design fashion and trendy textiles.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Coloring methods,introduction to dyeing and printing,basic differences between dyeing and printing,color concept and its occurance.
2 Brief history of textile dyestuffs, classification,harmony of dye stuff fibre, fastness properties, Colour Index, CIELab colour system
3 The differences between dyeing solutions and printing pastes, preparation methods of dyeing solutions, thickeners, preparation methods of printing pastes and recipes
4 Direct, discharge, resist, transfer printing methods and their basic differences, printing recipes
5 Continuity to the subject and examining fabric samples.
6 History of textile printing and its technological development,printing techniques,(Roller, rotary, flat screen, transfer) and screens
7 Continuity to the subject and examining the catalogues
8 Digital printing;basic properties, differences from other printing technologies, application areas.
9 Textile dyestuffs; properties of pigment,reactive,direct, vat, dispers, acid and other dye stuffs, dyeing-printing properties of dy stuffs according to kinds of fibres,recipes

11 Special printing methods; devore, metallic, emboss, pearl, flocking etc. printings and examining printed fabric samples
